I know I could pick up a phone book, go to a jeweler, or go to a pawn shop and guess it's x8 or x10, but I'm wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation? Or perhaps someone could tell me what loose gems are worth? I know there's someone on here who does this for a living, but I can't remember her screen name

go to JM Edwards in Cary off of Kildaire Farm Rd. I take all my antique family jewelery there to get appraised. They do a great job but it will cost you $texas

I had my fiance's engagement ring appraised at JM Edwards for $100. Too expensive and Edwards isn't the most amicable guy I've encountered.

^^i paid $150 but considering how much the jewelry was worth, it was small potatoes. It took over an hour to get the appraisel done and I sat with him in his office while he did it...no way i was leaving my shit there over night.

Certified Jewelry Appraiser Kim Piracci is GREAT! She is a bit of a drive (Chapel Hill) but she is reasonably priced - only $60 to appraise my engagement ring. Her website - http://www.kimpiracci.com/
