I have been getting an error saying something like "Instruction xxxxxxxxxx referenced memory location xxxxxxxx and the memory could not be "read". What the hell is going on?

usually when you see a lot of X's (atleast three) it's usually a sign for porn. Delete the porn and maybe it will go away.

You need to be a lot more detailed about the circumstances of your error. What you just told us essentially is "I hear a noise in my car...".

When does it happen?
What applications are running when it happen?
How old is your computer? What operating system?
Etc. Etc.

My computer is about a year and a half old. I am running windows xp. I get the error when I try to open random programs sometimes and also lately when I am trying to rip DVDs. I haven't been able to rip a DVD at all lately because it gets to about the halfway point and I get the error. Sorry I wasn't more specific, hope this helps. Thanks.

is you pc a tower or desktop?
where is it, upstairs or downstairs?
do you lock you windows?
where do you live?

How often does it happen? Every few minutes/hours/days? Alway in windows or when it boots? Always with a specific program? Any recent system changes? (new software, new hardware, new drivers, moved the computer in a car or to a different room recently, etc...)

If its happening randomly, there's a good chance your memory is screwed up. Download MemTest86, run it overnight, and see if it reports any errors.

Yea, memory might be it since it happens with different programs at different times.

Please post the full text of the error.

What you posted is the generic part of the error message. It will list the executable that is crashing. And the error code itself is sometimes useful (especially if its a Windows service).

OK, so I ran memtest86 and there were no problems. I also ran an online antivirus, McAfee antivirus, and two spyware detectors. I am still getting errors.

Firefox:
The instruction at 0x7c91of29 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read".

123CopyDVD:
The instruction at 0x015686d3 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read".
and
The instruction at 0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read".

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your HD could be dying, or it could be a buggy driver somewhere, or just a generally corrupt Windows install (which could be caused by a dying HD or buggy driver ).

Run some type of HD scanning application, if you have one.
