So recently I took a job in Norfolk, VA at the naval shipyard.
Anyone familiar with the area and have suggestions on good places to eat/things to do?
I've tried out a couple of the local watering holes and so far I'm disappointed.

Your best bets are things downtown within walking distance of the Norva and anything in Ghent. There's also some nice stuff in Va. Beach towards the oceanfront. Ask the longtime locals for specifics. There's stuff to do there, but you'll have an easier time finding it with someone who grew up there. If you don't like to drive, you're SOL. I grew up just across the stateline from Chesapeake, so I can tell you that if you're used to other places like Raleigh, you'll continue to be dissapointed in what Tidewater has to offer with a very few exceptions. You'll be able to find a lot more to do once spring and summer comes around.

I co-oped at the shipyard in Newport News. In the summer there's a lot of festivals and like pirate conventions and stuff. But I dunno about winter.

two things to do:

get on 264, take it to 58 which runs to emporia...get on 95 south there and go about an hour into NC. there you can get on 64 and head to raleigh. takes about 3 1/2 hours

or

get on 64 heading north...take that to 295 north which merges with 95 north of Richmond...follow that right into DC

whatever you do, don't stay in Norfolk. every once and a while it can be ok for a weekend when you don't feel like traveling. but after my first 6 months there, I was out of town every weekend I could get away

i wouldn't sweat the no-fuck comment...never had a problem meeting women when i lived there...just distance yourself from the e-dogs...and don't get a buzz cut

This is the best advice you can receive. Downton Norfolk is somewhat comparable to Glenwood South with lots of new resturaunts and bars within walking distance of each other.. The Bier Garden in d/t Portsmouth is worth visiting also. Its only a few blocks from NNSY.

Many moons ago, a bar called Friar Tucks across the street from ODU used to have ten cent wings on Tuesday nights.

Ghent is pretty nice.

Years ago, Waterfront in downtown Norfolk used to be decent. The Boathouse used to be a good place to see bands.

The strip in Va Beach has a couple of decent bars.

I think the big mall there is the MacAuthor Mall in Norfolk.

disclaimer - I haven't lived there in about 7 years.

stick to real bars on the Va Beach side - the 21+ places...stay as far away as you can from the 18+ joints

i did enjoy karaoke at AJ Gators on weeknights back in the day

I'll be there in late May. I'm pretty easily entertained, going to see the Tides during the summer and get tanked is always a good way to spend a summer evening as far I'm concerned. Then once baseball is winding down, the Admirals start playing.

i feel sorry for people who get sucked into thinking Va Beach is a good place to go...it makes the Jersey shore look like the USVI's

I went to an Admirals game and it was awesome. There are a lot more fights in minor league hockey so it makes for a pretty exciting game

There's a tidewater ultimate league up there. I played with them this past summer/fall, and they're all pretty cool. Here's their website, you can join their yahoo group and be on the mailing list for their pickup games and whatnot.

I didn't get out too much socially, so i cant help you too much in that department. Are you working in the shipbuilding yard or the naval base?

I haven't been since they became an AHL team, but I imagine it's still pretty fun. Back when I went they were in the ECHL and called the Hampton Roads Admirals. Games between them and the Richmond Renegades were brutal, you weren't safe in the stands at those games in certain seating areas because fighting would break out there too.
