I have a 3 year old HP zt3000 laptop, it has dvd-rw and a cd-rw built into one drive, now the drive will only read dvd's but not cd's, I thought the drive was shit so i bought a usb drive tonite but it has the same problem, so besides being an HP what is the problem here?

Anyone think they can fix this for some $$$, or know somewhere to take it to...?

Sounds like some kind of software issue if it doesn't work w/ an external drive either. Try a different OS, like a Linux or BSD Live CD.

Try a booting to an XP CD. If that'll work then I'd suggest an FnR.

also make sure you've downloaded and installed all the latest drivers for mobo and components from HP's website
