I just got a 3yr old Jack Russell. I noticed a couple of days ago that he had a few worms in his stool, so I gave him peanut butter and they disappeared. I haven't seen one in about 2 days. Then this morning, a little blood came out in his stool. Any ideas or suggestions of what it could be.

His medical records and vetinarian are in Jacksonville, NC. He isn't due for a check up until May. I am going down there on Friday, but I don't want to wait that long if its real serious. He got his heart worm medication last month, but he hasn't gotten it this month. Please Help!!

looking at the dog's poop is the best way to get an overall idea of his health.

why peanut butter? that's not a dewormer. it's peanut butter.

(heartworms show up in the heart, not the intestines, btw...so his lack of heartworm medicine has nothing to do with it...unless it's the kind that has stuff that also protects against intestinal worms)

he most likely just needs to be dewormed, but yeah call your vet.

What good is peanutbutter supposed to do? .......if he's got worms the only way to treat them is with medication. many worms you would not be able to see without a microscope (especially ones that would cause bloody stool). he needs to atleast have a stool check done by a vet...

this happens a lot to my dogs, because they like to chew up plastic pieces around the house and i think when they are exiting their body they cut him somehow and he bleeds - make sure the dog isnt eating anything that could possibly cut him, but you would know if he was eating them because it would show up with the blood

get him some drontal, from a local vet clinic or maybe one of those petsmarts that have vets there. you'll probably have to spend up to $20 on a one time dose of the stuff.

deworming doesn't really hurt even if they dont have worms, so you can save yourself the test & $ if you really want to.

if that doesnt clear it up, then i'd take a fresh sample to a clinic to be tested

Crossroads vet clinic works with students pricing wise if you have a big issue. Hell I think most vets in the area do. You're looking at a very basic checkup here. Bloodwork etc. If it's worms add about $40 for medication. Nothing major.

Peanut butter does something to a couple types of worms (either makes them release or just pass) not sure. But it's definitely not how to treat all types.

Go do a checkup.

$40 for meds for worms? That’s double what Carrboro Plaza Vet Clinic charges even for the largest of dogs. But then again CPVC doesn't charge dispensing fees as often or as high as alot of other vet clinics.

Capstar, an anti flee oral treatment, is something we sell for less than 3 bucks that a nearby clinic sells for like 10 each due to their dispensing fee.

Maybe the crossroads place uses something more expensive than drontal, but if not, then they are ripping ppl off at $40. Although having served nearly 16 k ppl over the last 16 years, CPVC can afford to get discounts from buying in bulk.

The crossroads people arent all bad for sure, they've always been nice when I've spoken to them to get records for people who recently moved to the Carrboro/Chapel Hill/Durham area who take their pets to CPVC.
