This is a fairly big game for the lady Pack....UVA is a good team and we need the win after losing to Duke and UNC.

I'm pretty sure she's ugly as hell because she's had cancer 3 times. I'm no fucking doctor though.

she came to my cousin's wake in september and waited in line 2+ hours to talk to his family (all huge state fans, alumni), and she didn't even know them personally... just knew them through an acquintance i think. lots of respect for her.

Cancer kept Kay Yow out for about two months.

A hamstring injury kept Atsur out for 3 months.

that's awesome.

i worked for kay for two years and i can say that she is one of the nicest people i have ever met in my life. she's a great, great person and a great coach and motivator as well. she still jumps in the drills if things are going wrong and is VERY aggressive when that happens...it was really neat seeing that.

Anyone going to the Hoops for Hope game?

"It's time to join Coach Yow's team
Pack coach tenaciously battles breast cancer, promotes awareness
Caulton Tudor, Staff Writer

Kay Yow plans to be in Reynolds Coliseum on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon.

You should, too.

So what if you're not fired up about N.C. State women's basketball?

So what if you're not fired up about basketball -- men's or women's -- at all?

So what if you're a North Carolina fan? Or a Duke fan? Or a Maryland, Connecticut, Tennessee, Louisiana State or anywhere else fan?

Just go, be thankful for your blessings and wear something pink, whether it's a thin plastic bracelet or a ribbon or a barrette or an Easter rabbit suit straight out the wardrobe department from the movie "A Christmas Story."

What's going on with Yow and her N.C. State program isn't so much about basketball. It's not even totally about sports. That's part of it, of course.

Yow hasn't coached actively since November, when she began to show signs of a recurrence of breast cancer. Her treatment, which includes chemotherapy, continues but her health has improved to the point that doctors will allow a return to the sidelines.

The veteran Wolfpack coach will want her team to win on Thursday against Virginia and again on Sunday against Boston College.

There's even a chance that Yow might jump from her chair and give a referee a good piece of her mind. No one fights cancer the way Yow has -- is -- without being competitive.

Behind her bright smile and gracious personality, Yow has the courage of and determination of a lioness. She has been fighting breast cancer since 1987. The odds favor her opponent, which she understands. It is a foe she fears but she won't retreat or surrender.

"If there's only a 1 percent chance, I could be the 1 percent," Yow said Monday.

The essence of Yow's battle is that she's constantly looking ahead -- the one thing coaches never admit to doing but all do. If she's got a 1 percent chance, she's working to make sure the next generation of cancer patients has a 2 percent chance, then 3 percent, then 4, then 50.

"There are people out there fighting harder battles than I'm fighting. There are many people out there fighting this battle of cancer who truly are my heroes and heroines," Yow said.

Unlike most of those other fighters, Yow is a public figure. She ranks among the successful basketball coaches in the sport's history. Her strategy is to make that work for cancer research.

Yow has made it her business to be a magnet to the larger audience. She's as determined to spread the cancer research message as she is to get through her next exam.

Ina Wiggins, who has worked as Yow's office administrator for the past 30 years, says the coach has received hundreds of e-mails, cards and messages of encouragement from all over the world. One way or another, almost everyone gets a response. All are cherished.

"Her energy is incredible," Wiggins said. "Even when I know she's not feeling her best, she does everything she can to turn the attention she gets into something positive in the work against cancer. There's not a day that passes when she isn't involved in some way."

So this will be special weekend. Almost 100 of Yow's former players and assistant coaches will be in town to welcome back the coach and lend their support to the "Hoops for Hope" game Sunday.

"It's going to be a big week for Coach Yow and a big week for all of us," State player Khadijah Whittington said. "It would be extra special if we could give her a couple of wins."

Fans can win without having to worry about the scoreboard or too much about the family budget. Tickets to the game Thursday against Virginia will be $7 for adults. Those under the age of 17 get in free. On Sunday, adult tickets will go for $10 and children for $5. There's no parking fee.

In keeping with the school spirit that has marked State's athletic heritage, the "ocean of red" in the stands is frequently cited as the ultimate show of support. In this case, an "ocean of pink" is more in tune to the need.

Get out there. Get pink, even if your favor colors are light blue, royal blue, black, orange or whatever. Yell for the team you favor.

But most of all, show Kay Yow what you really think about her. One good way might be to phone the American Cancer Society (1-800-227-2345) or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (1-888-888-3317) and write a check for a few bucks.

Tell 'em you're on Coach Yow's team."

^ You are majoring in communications, and you are not a hott female. I suggest you learn to be respectful of other people so someone can find you a janitorial position..... Otherwise you will be on Hillsborough Street begging. Sadly, the first person to give you money would be Kay Yow even if she knew your harsh statements, that’s the kind of lady she is. .... So STFU NOOB
