is it possible for someone on their own to obtain security clearance? the reason i ask is because i'm looking at engineering jobs in the defense industry which require security clearance and i would think one could apply for it on their own, but i just don't know how. anyone know of good resources to help?

im not sure if they allow an individual to obtain clearance anymore....typically you have to be sponsored by a company that has been approved by the government.even if they did, it would cost quite a bit of money. i dont know about the cost of a secret, but i know a top secret can cost over $100,000.every company ive seen that requires a security clearance will pay to have one performed....especially on entry level positions.

ahh so the individual just can't decide to get one to be more marketable to companies/the government?
