wouldn't the engine be pretty apt to twisting and flexing? One of my dad's friends has a packard collection, they are pretty cool cars.

That's one of the big reasons they don't build them anymore. That and the very low natural frequency and harmonics of a crankshaft that long. Hit resonance and shatter the crank and pound out the bearing saddles.What do you think killed the early runs of the E46 M3 cranks? HARMONICS.

an old man told me once about a guy who ran a frick sawmill with a Buick straight 8. He said he had a foot throttle rigged up so he could rev it up right before the carriage got to the blade since car motors don't have governors.
