http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=455698&page=1UPDATE: Okay, well this is weird. So Brendan was taken off life support and is STILL living! So much so that he asked for chicken nuggets. So back to the drawing board. My cousin said they found B- donors for blood. Now they need bone marrow. Anyone have any ideas on how to find someone with matching marrow?

1/15/2007 5:29:45 PM
^I'm pretty sure you aren't charged for the procedure...kinda like some vets don't charge you if it's a rescue...

The Red Cross runs a national bone marrow library of sorts, where you can be cataloged based on results from a simple blood test. I don't know the specifics on how they determine who is a good candidate, but this seems like the best option.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm O- bloody (universal donor) ... I don't know what the requirements are for marrow but if I can help I will be happy to. I'm glad to hear that he is doing better.

Incidentally, marrow matching is more complex than just blood type. It requires matching HLA (antigens present on the cells) types. The easiest option is a sibling donor, which isn't possible in this case.Even if the blood type is incompatible, it's possible to eliminate the red blood cells from the donated marrow (the real goal of a BMT is to transplant the progenitors of white cells).

unfortunately, my fiance and i are both A+.best of luck to brendan and your family. it looks like some good people are coming out of the woodwork here on tww after all.

there is a bone marrow registry, which i'm sure the doctors have told your family abouti'm in the database and if anyone in this thread is serious about helping someone in need of bone marrow, go join the registrybone marrow matches outside of sibling relationships are rare but possibleyou will probably need to go to one of their centers to get a sample of your blood taken so they can put the info in the databasei've been in the registry for about 3 years and haven't recieved a call yethere is the info from the letter i have from the registry i'm inNational Marrow Donor Programhttp://www.marrow.orgi-800-MARROW-2National Marrow Donor ProgramNMDP at Greater Southeast Area245 Park Road PO Box 36507Charlotte, NC 28236-6507Phone: (888) 298-6375[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 8:39 PM. Reason : i'm O- and have never recieved a call from the database after 3+ years, its more than just your type]

i've had about 2000 spinal taps and anything with the bone marrow isn't very fun, but the procedures now are a lot less painful than when i was 2.5 years old. good luck!

I've been meaning to get on a bone marrow registry. I'll ask the Red Cross folks about it the next time they are at work for a blood drive. It is very rare that you will actually be found as a match. I had a teacher in high school who was called after being on the registry for years. From what I've heard the recovery process takes a couple of days and it is painful, but it would be worth it to save a life.

Shouldn't you be asking doctors/hospitals on how to find matching bone marrow instead of TWW?
1/16/2007 10:21:41 AM
i have to imagine tww is the far reaching backup plan - if it's not then it sure as hell should be
1/16/2007 10:23:33 AM
it never hurts to try every possible outlet. a lot of marrow donors are found through message boards, word of mouth, etc.

Wow this is really awesome that he's actually doing better!! How long can they keep giving him transfusions?I'm O+, so if anyone is a + and needs a pint of my blood, let me know. I should get marrow typed, I would go through the proceedure if I knew it would save someone's life. I mean, pain for a few days for me...giving someone another chance at life...the choice is obvious.[Edited on January 16, 2007 at 11:19 AM. Reason : ]

I wish the damn typing kits from marrow.org weren't $52 Looks like if you're typed at a drive or otherwise in person, odds are good that you won't have to pay. But...the next drive in NC is in March in Charlotte, and the nearest center to campus is in Durham. I'm still gonna give them a call.

my company was going to sell bone biopsy needles....jesus those things look scary-random
1/16/2007 2:38:51 PM
The guy I knew who donated marrow gave it to a 3-year-old girl who ended up living after the transplant. He said that it hurt so bad he could barely move, but then one day he woke up and felt better and went off to fight in Iraq.

for me, pain is no reason to not do something (see my gallery )
