Anyone gotten this phone through Alltel? Does it come with the cable to connect the phone to the computer for data transfer (for picts and MP3s)?

I've got the RAZR V3c from Alltel, its a great phone but like ^ said, it does not come with the data transfer cable. I just use my Canon digital camera cable, its USB to USB-mini cable.

Also you have to purchase or download the Motorola PhoneTools software so your computer can charge and sync with your phone.

yeah, i use the cable that came with a Rio mp3 player...seems to work. The phone really kicks ass. Be careful though, it will slip out of your pocket in the car!

^ There isn't a legal free copy avaliable, but you can download it from motorola's website for around $4.00.

Where? When i go there they want to charge me $30 to download it. And i realize there is no free legal copy but I'm sure there is software out there you can use.

^ If you show some patience and learn to read you'll see that they sell 2 versions. The $30.00 one comes with a cable and the CD. The $4.00 version is just a download.

It seems like they changed the price. I got my copy from the motorola store 2 weeks ago for $4.00. Now the download only version is $30.00. That sucks.

There are some open source programs out there that replicate most of the features of the motorola phone tools. In fact, for tasks like skinning or altering the in-call logos and whatnot, you'll need different software anyway. Google will set you free.

you can find the driver to use the phone as a modem and to charge it via USB for free online, but if you want to backup your phonebook and/or transfer data to the phone, it's impossible to find online

you'll have to cough up the $30

Open source transfer software - Gnokii

If you just want to charge it, there are no drivers of any kind necessary. It just draws from USB power.(Which is also why the car charger works w/ any usb powered device too!) The drivers just allow you to use it as a modem and data transfer, only when you're lucky.. For data transfer, I would recommend using bluetooth. Mine is a royal pain in the ass with a cable, so I bought a cheap bluetooth adapter on eBay and haven't had any trouble since.

i cant charge my phone on campus computers because they wont allow me to install activesync (smartphone). i plug in the usb cable and it doesnt charge.

You do need the drivers to charge at least under Windows, because without the drivers the OS looks at the port, sees a Malfunctioning Device (not a standard USB device) and switches off the USB port. If you plug it in while your computer is on standby, or boot into an OS without USB support (like DOS) the phone will charge just fine. I don't know how Mac OS or Linux will behave under these circumstances.
