i moved to uptown charlotte so i no longer can join ncsu's gymnow what i'm having difficulty deciding is whether 15 bucks a month is worth a more social environment and... racquetball and pool etc.So... i decided rather than be mature about this and make a decision...i'd leave it to t-dub.

Don't know anything about peak fitness, but I love the Y. Yeah, it's a little more per month, but the equipment is always maintained well, the staff is extremely helpful, and i take advantage of the sports leagues that they offer at no additional cost.I used to go to beyond fitness on duraleigh, and that place sucked ass. it was cheap, but there was always a shortage of equipment, and they took months to get equipment repaired. If Peak fitness is one of those discount places, i'd stay away.

Peak bought out the Beyonds, and from best I can tell, they are closing a few of them and concentrating on making the other ones nicer.I work out at the Maynard Rd one and they have laid new carpet, put down new rubber, painted the place, fixed the machines that were broken, brought in new TVs, re-leathered (vinyl'd?) all the machines, and just generally gave the place a nice cleaning.Though, at the moment the new years rush has the place pretty slammed in the evenings, and it seems like the squeezed some new machines in where they didn't have space and it is mildly claustrophobic in that area. All that said, an extra 180 a year to get the fitness you want isn't shit. You probably spend that in a few weekends at the bar.

I work out at the downtown Peak, but I got a hell of a deal for membership. What they seem to be trying to charge now is ridiculous though.
1/15/2007 9:09:27 AM
^what are they charging now? I re-signed my contract with them prior to the new year before the price increase.
1/15/2007 9:22:27 AM
IIRC, $30 a month for a two year contract with $50 something upfront (because there's a $99 off initial discount at the moment).Or like $60/$70 monthly with no contract and $150 upfront.I got $15 a month with no startup fee, but then again that might only be because Beyond Fitness up and disappeared.[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 11:52 AM. I'm paid up front for 3 years and it works out to about $8 per month for me.

The Y is better. Especially if you're going to the Dowd YMCA on Morehead, it's humongous and has everything you would need. I go there 5-6 times a week.
1/15/2007 12:02:55 PM
yeah... i can walk to the dowd YMCA
1/15/2007 12:08:02 PM
i understand that there are lots of hot bitches at the dowd y
1/15/2007 12:33:07 PM
i think i'm going to join soon...i'll scout for ya BGT[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 12:51 PM. Reason : .]

go with the YMCA
1/16/2007 7:17:23 AM
Since you are considered a young adult, you get a membership to the dowd, gateway, and overstreet. Solid if you ask me. I like the uptown y's more than the 1 peak. Much more conveinent, too.

I've had a membership at several YMCA's.They usually have basketball and racquetball courts and even an indoor swimming pool. They always have free coffee at the desk when you check in. They also have various classes you can take, such as cardio training, biking or Tae Kwon Do. You can even go to other YMCA's for free when you are out of town. Some even have private floors for men only with their own gym, saunas, barbershops and tv lounge.Needless to say I am happy with it and its well worth the $28 or so a month.[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 11:58 PM. As soonas I get out of my Gold membership I think I am gonna go Y. Its a bit far from me but I want to play more bball than my church league offers. Damn I really miss Carmicheal.
1/18/2007 12:03:45 AM
my fiance worked at the Y ... she loved the classes they offered
1/18/2007 12:21:06 AM
I just joined the YMCA in December and have been really happy with my decision. They offer so many different classes and activities, the workout facilities and machines are well taken care of, and the people that work there are always friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend it!

Peak Fitness is a good choice. They have gyms all over the state now so you can work out at any location. The one downtown is awesome. Oh yeah, they're open 24 hours too...can't beat that.[Edited on January 21, 2007 at 5:47 PM. Reason : .]

the charlotte peak isn't open 24 hours. I had a free month pass adn tried to go very late one night and they were closed. I think the mathews is open 24 hours m-f.[Edited on January 21, 2007 at 6:38 PM. Reason : ]

yeah charlotte y isn'tnext day w/ decent weather i'm joining
1/21/2007 6:41:22 PM
sumfoo1, go talk to both and try them both out. They will both give you free passes.
1/21/2007 6:58:05 PM
peak sucks
1/21/2007 7:10:18 PM
good idea... cool.
1/21/2007 7:21:43 PM
you know the Y isn't going to close their doors on you overnight. the same can't be said for Peak Fitness.
1/21/2007 7:43:16 PM
^that makes no sense
1/21/2007 7:51:19 PM
yeah it does Ymca has been around since i can remember... these dime a dozen gyms flip every 2 years or so.
1/21/2007 8:03:26 PM
it makes perfect sense. Peak Fitness bought a chain of gyms that has folded under twice in a ten year span. I can't remember the last time I heard of a YMCA closing its doors in this area.
1/21/2007 8:51:14 PM
oh I thought you were referring to them closing their doors overnight in relation to being open 24 hours.
1/22/2007 8:00:47 PM
Ymca is so much cleaner and nicer than ANY healthclub/gizzmI do most of my workout at the YMCA when I'm not at state.
1/22/2007 8:31:31 PM
Beyond Fitness became So-Fit. So-Fit became Peak Fitness. Peak Fitness will become something else within a year or two.
1/22/2007 8:44:52 PM
I go to the Peak Fitness in McGregor (just got bought by them, used to be MacGregor Health Spa).. it is nice, but they haven't done a whole lot to it... i mean it already had a jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, etc... So.... I like it, but i don't think they all have that.
1/22/2007 8:58:31 PM
YMCA 4 life. Word.
1/22/2007 9:09:22 PM
peak bought another chain here...the one rick flare owned umm....shit i can't think of it.
1/22/2007 10:47:48 PM
I thought he had some Golds'
1/22/2007 11:02:39 PM
i go to the peak near the university... it has been peak for quite a few years now... it is 24 hours as well... does not have the extras that the y does.... but it does have a bball court and many classes you can take... my wife is a teacher and got a great deal... i think military gets discounts too
1/23/2007 4:37:27 PM
btttwent in today to talk about memberships. since im a "student" its $250 a year if i pay in full.or it turns out to be $1 a day ($365 a year)the gym i goto now, its good and everything, but its much farther than peak, and its toooo overcrowded when i go, its open 24 hours, but the times that im available for the gym are wack times and it sucks. i need to move on.i wanna do planet fitness, but i checked out their gym today, it looks small.so its either stay for free at fit24 and deal with the hassle of the st. aug or whatever college track team being in there.orplanet fitness for $10 a monthor$250 paid in full at peak. i wanna do planet because its cheap, but IMO you get what you pay for, i learned that at fit24.
1/24/2007 9:53:59 PM
are you in raleigh? If so, seriously look at the y's. The rates I think were cheaper than peak for y. adult or 'student'. The downtown y is also about to open their new facility--but, their old works just fine, too.
1/25/2007 11:04:56 AM
1/25/2007 11:23:12 AM
sumfoo1 I'll join if you do. And then we can play racquetball together.I've been thinking about joining the Dowd Y for a while.
