... would it be possible to embed a virus into a thread? i only ask this because as i keep looking at the more and more complex files that are getting embedded, the thought crossed my mind about where the limit lies with what can be embedded

Viruses can only be spread when executed, just like any other program. If you have your browser set to automatically run embedded programs--Java doesn't count, because you're protected, but ActiveX controls do--then you pretty much deserve whatever you get.

fortunately, i have my computer set that with the exception of a few files, in order for an embedded program to work i have to download it, evem mp3's are like that... i'm just worried for other people

With as many security holes as there are in today's browsers, it would be extremely simple to take advantage of a well-known exploit and execute code on any user's machine. Fact of the matter is, most folks don't know how to do that, and the ones who do know better than to do it.
