Other topics were too old to bump.A friend and I are going to DC next weekend for one night and need a hotel room. We're looking for cheap since we're getting in late and only need a place to crash. We'll be sight-seeing in DC on Saturday, so the closer the better. I'm only 20 and don't have a credit card (i have a debit card, may be able to borrow a credit card from my dad). We also have military ID, so if you know of any places that discount for that, it'd help.Any suggestions???

Arlington-rosslyn is right across the river. they have a subway station and all and the hotels are very very reasonable compared to dc. this is your best bet as it is closer to most of the sites than much of dc.

I'd definitely recommend a hotel in Arlington or even Alexandria, if you're looking to save some money. You don't even need to find one that's metro adjacent. Most reasonable hotels (read: not shady) have shuttles that will take you to nearest metro.

Some hotels if you call and talk to the front desk they will waive the age thing if you're 20. I reserved lots when I was 18/19 by just asking nicely.

Don't get shot
1/8/2007 5:15:53 PM
Knew I was forgetting a requirement in the original post. You sure I won't get shot there tuff_fratguy? Anyone else know where I won't get shot? Or maybe more helpful, where to stay away from that I would get shot?
1/8/2007 5:26:05 PM
you aren't going to get shot anywhere you pussy.you aren't going to new orleans. where you'll be hanging out in DC isn't some war zone or anything/
1/8/2007 5:44:34 PM
Maybe that's why it was in the original post; I was just trying to keep the thread alive a bit longer.

Just be street smart. D.C. has its fair share of crime and it can occur anywhere in the city. Just be smart. There are hoods to avoid but if you are just sight seeing, you won't wind up in them.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 6:14 PM. ^ You could get a good hotel in the District for less than $100 on some websites (hotels.com/ priceline, et. al.), but if he doesn't have a credit card, he might be SOL.

you guys all have misconstrued perceptions about dcyou'll be fine, you wont get robbed, and you can walk around just about anywhere that you would really know how to get to just fine it's pretty hard to wander into any of the so-called "bad areas" of dc without really trying, mainly because there's nothing really around them to draw out of towners to

when we went to DC for a TOOL concert in the fall we got a really nice hotel room off priceline.com. Priceline is tricky b/c you tell them a general district of DC and then the price that you're willing to pay and they take your money first... but we restricted our search to high # of stars and the higher end part of town. signed up for one person, but three of us stayed in a single room, $90 for the night. We got somewhere around 40-50% off the original price of the room... and got it for MUCH cheaper than anywhere else would quote for us for that time. good luck finding a room & have fun!!**and as for all of this "bad areas don't exist" bullshit... we ended up in some pretty damn sketchy areas... and since you aren't going to be familiar with the area & sightseeing, staying away from them is useful b/c you'll be walking a lot. we got lost due to bad directions-- their roads are confusing as hell if you don't know about the naming convention (none of us had any idea about the NE/NW/SE/SW) Our place was called something Hamilton... maybe you could find out what the name of that area is... i'm going to post the two pictures i got of the outside in my photos for you[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 9:44 PM. me too, I mean, you can't say "you won't get robed". Maybe you forgot why we just went under a crime emergency this past summer, and what about all the tourist getting robbed on the Mall? i agree with Restricted.
1/8/2007 9:45:54 PM
that was determined to be an isolated incident, if you will recall...im saying, i live and work in SE and I've never felt unsafe walking/riding a bike anywhere in that quadrant from the hill all the way to the river

o, rilly? where would a tourist go that they really need to worry about anything you are trying to project onto them?no one is going to NE...and they're definitely not hitting up the SW waterfront or anything anytime soon as a tourist....i know you probably want to tell people you live in such a hard city, b, but shit just isnt there
1/8/2007 9:51:54 PM
^damn you're stupid.you can't fucking say that you "won't" get robbed in any big city. But, yes, the odds are against it -- if you pay attention to your surroundings. and yes, DC does has some rough areas, unfortunately. Thank God it's mostly the dumbass blacks killing each other.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 9:59 PM. Reason : .]

^^^ The Hamilton Crowne Plaza? That's on 14th St. near McPherson Square. ^ We're not saying that DC doesn't have sketchy areas. It absolutely does. But, guess what? So does Raleigh. It's a city, just be smart about your behavior and you'll be fine. If you're here for touristy stuff, there's absolutely no reason to end up in any sketchy areas. My advice to you is: 1. Plan shit. I live in DC and I don't go anywhere without knowing exactly how to get where I need to be. Metro has a great website and Google and Yahoo have integrated the Metro stops into their maps--there's no excuse to get lost. 2. Get familiar with taxi zones. If you're out drinking in Adams Morgan or enjoying a Happy Hour downtown, you'll need to catch a cab back. There are cabbies who will quickly label you a tourist and charge you more than they should on the cab ride. Taxicab Fare Calculator: http://citizenatlas.dc.gov/atlasapps/taxifare.aspx3. In relation to #2, always know the nearest cross streets of where ever you're going. 4. Happy Hours: http://www.schnozbot.com/[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 10:00 PM. Reason : edit]
