In law enforcement, there are many openly gay lesbian officers in departments all over the country. Also, these lesbian officers are generally well accepted and there is not a lot animosity towards them. I know about this first hand. However, as far as openly gay male officers go, they are few and far between and I am willing to bet they are not nearly as accepted as the lesbian officers. As far as my experience in law enforcement, I dont know of any openly gay male officers. there may be plenty of them that hide it, i dont know, but hardly any openly gay ones. i am not stating an opinion here, but merely pointing out the reality of the situation and id like to know your feedback. i just want to hear peoples reasoning of this. i personally could care less if an officer was openly gay so long as he was capable of doing the job, which is my same opinion for anyone else in law enforcement for that matter

If the military can't handle it, why would the police, aka the dregs who couldn't cut it in the military, be able to handle it?

I would think that its harder to be come a police officer then an enlisted man.

many people would rather spend a night in jail than be padded by a poofter

because lesbian cops are masculine, and gay men are effeminate.and basically you want a man backing you up if shit goes down.

Law Enforcement is considered a macho profession and very para-military which doesn't foster an environment of sexual tolerance. While gays/lesbians are capable of working the job, its not common place. I remember watching something on the Discovery Times Channel (I think) and it dealt with a gay cop and his partner, he was one tough ass-SOB, and had a straight partner, but his partner took flak for being his partner. Also, in the book, Breaking Rank by Norm Stamper, he talks about hiring more gay cops so that less prejudice will occur when dealing w/ crimes/complaints involving the gay community. Maybe one day society will show that religious and sexual intolerance leads to nothing.

One of the people I work with at the vet clinic is a retired cop from the chapel hill or carrboro police force and a lesbian, and she has never mentioned anything that would make it seem out of place to have gay cops.
