Just wondering how this will turn out and if any of yall will stick around for both events? We play DUKE on Saturday Jan. 20th on ABC at 3:30 then the Hurricanes host the Tampa Bay Lighting that night at 8:30. Also we play Carolina on Saturday February 3rd at 3:30 on ABC and then the Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins at 8:30. Does that really leave them enough time for the hockey game to start on time? Also how is traffic during this time and do a lot of people just stay in their spots and tailgate for the hockey game? I mean I want to tailgate before the Duke game like 1-3ish and then hang out afterwards and go to the hockey game. Any of yall doing this?

they only need about 90 minutes to convert the arena
1/4/2007 6:07:11 PM
Also this Saturday we are playing BC at 2 and the Canes play the Islanders that night. This is a good way for me to go to my first Canes game since I'll already be there for our game.

i would like to find a hiding spot or something, so I dont have to leave, 2 for the price of one
1/4/2007 6:11:44 PM
those should be around 3 hours between the end of the bball game and the hockey game. I remember one time last year or maybe the year before that they only had like 45 minutes to an hour between the end of bball and hockey.you can watch what they are doing in there at any time:[Edited on January 4, 2007 at 6:16 PM. ^i think it was last yearthey had to start moving some of the chairs in the student section out in the second half
1/4/2007 6:16:09 PM
made this when i was bored.. it doesn't take long and this was already being discussed in the hurricanes thread and this saturday's game thread but i guess this thread it worthy enough, but obviously it will be fine if they schedule them]

http://homepage.mac.com/ghesla/iMovieTheater2.htmlvideo from when the rbc center goes from basketball to hockey to concert floor in the same day
1/4/2007 9:28:26 PM
damn i had to make mine manually, couldn't figure out a quick way to do it automaticlly
1/4/2007 9:31:46 PM
If I remember correctly, they can go from basketball to hockey very quickly since all they have to do is take the floor up. They do need significantly more time to put the basketball floor down on top of the hockey floor i believe. I doubt you'll ever seen a noon hockey game (like on a saturday) and a basketball game that night unless it's like a 9pm tip maybe possibly, not a very big chance though.
1/4/2007 10:18:46 PM
hide in the bathroom
1/4/2007 10:20:52 PM
bigun, the glass has to go up too.
1/4/2007 10:24:15 PM
lower the nets, attach the nets to the glass, rebuild the temporary seats (student seats for basketball) to rise up to the lower concourse seats, and not to mention make it colder~
1/4/2007 10:27:04 PM
by the way its kinda funny how they do it on the big games, because if we [impossibly] pull the upset on either one duke or unc, that court better be rushed, (maybe not the duke game, unless they don't lose or something), and that'll take even longer to get everyone off of itgame over at 5:30-5:40, everyone is out by 5:55-6:05, doors normally would open at 7:30 (one hour before), skating begins about 8:00.essentially 90-115 minutes to do the changeover before letting people in, add 30 just to have it ready to skate on but still let people in (although that'd look kinda weird)
1/4/2007 11:09:11 PM
Well hott damn, I think I might stick around, not this saturday even though we play BC then it goes into a hockey game but for the duke and carolina games I am going to stick around maybe go to damons for a few beers and come back in for the game, that or go sit out at my car and booze it up. GO PACK AND CANES!

1/5/2007 3:36:03 PM
you can't really tell that big of a difference from when its packed from when its not
1/5/2007 3:37:45 PM
I dont know but they got it nice and ready to go for tomorrow's bball game. You can see they are working on it right this second.
1/5/2007 8:47:42 PM
1/5/2007 9:43:29 PM
my gf (who used to work at RBC) says that they do an entire sweep of the building, clear everyone out and clean everything. she also said that 90 minutes is just about the absolute minimum to switch evertyhing over.
1/5/2007 9:52:41 PM
^^ Production notes don't matter down at ice level, since that dumb bastard of a "hockey announcer" couldn't get a penalty call right if you fed it directly into his brain.[/vent]
1/5/2007 10:06:09 PM
When they had to switch it over quickly last year it fucked up the tempo of the game as they moved all the students from the goals.
1/5/2007 10:07:49 PM
1/5/2007 10:12:28 PM
^i think i'll take her word over you guys', thanks. plus, she has worked a number of these games where this happened.

i'm not saying changing the floor. there's more than just that to be done. i'm talking about time from shutting the doors on the basketball people and opening the doors for the hockey people.
1/6/2007 6:16:41 PM
but the majority of the shit that has to be done is done by us, the floor crew. We change seating, pickup/place the bball floor and subfloor, work on glass, and do the production notes throughout the building. most of the time we have to wait on the other employees to get their shti done before we can do ours.
1/6/2007 7:16:05 PM
so can the entire switchover be done in less than 90 minutes or not? i seriously want to know. i'll take that you guys can get the floor done in less than that. but that is by no means the entire process.
1/6/2007 7:18:35 PM
we did it today officially in an hour and 20 minutes. that was not counting going back and checking to make sure everything was done. when you calculate that in along with a few other misc. items that are usually done right before the game anyway, it took us right at 90 min, plus/minus a few minutes.
1/6/2007 7:47:36 PM
It would have been quicker had Marshall not been fucking around in the back and Rusty hadn't been up on the fucking catwalk whistling at people for an hour.
1/6/2007 8:43:14 PM
yea but hell, that's a normal occurrence now-a-days. at least rusty wasn't able to put the curtain up wrong like he did that one time.
1/6/2007 9:23:53 PM
nevermind, had rusty been down stairs it would have taken an hour.
1/6/2007 9:29:29 PM
lol..by the way, they showed a clip of you guys changing it in fast motion during the hockey game
1/6/2007 11:03:55 PM
article in the N&O today about it..video here: http://www.newsobserver.com/1235/story/529551.htmlarticle: http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/529793.html[Edited on January 7, 2007 at 7:23 PM. ^^A countdown clock.

Cbowncsuq and nutsmackr, thanks for props. I'll make sure Dan sees what you've been writing about me and gives you guys plenty to do next changeover. I'm sure Marshall will love to see this as well.Peace, see you at work.
1/7/2007 8:39:50 PM
hahaha
1/7/2007 8:54:45 PM
you aren't rusty. Besides, you'd know who I report to at work and realize I don't interact with Dan.
1/7/2007 11:43:52 PM
1/8/2007 12:10:37 AM
that is correct. The biggest problem with the basketball court is finding the center.
1/8/2007 2:36:10 AM
It's kinda cool that the good ol' E. S. of A. was featured indirectly on the front page of howstuffworks today
1/8/2007 2:55:06 AM
Except that they didn't change the article to note that the Canes have switched away from the uberdangerous seamless glass on the sides of the rink.
1/8/2007 4:25:50 AM
Sykes is going to pound your ass into the ground when he finds out you've been talking shit about me.
1/8/2007 4:43:00 AM
that's okay, I got drunk with Sykes last night.
1/8/2007 11:46:06 AM
