i'm changing the interior in my corvette over to black, and there's a few plastic pieces that i can't find in decent shape used and are ridiculously priced new. i know that some spray paints specifically for interior panels have come out since the ricer craze of recent years. so who makes the best one?

/me sheds a tear for your vette

why? it's a non original ragged out 84, no numbers matching restoration special. exscuse me for not being into spending $160 EACH for door sills when mine are crack free, just faded and not the color i want.

There are several really good choices for interior plastic panel paint. On of my alltime favorites is Krylon. Yep, you heard me right. Krylon contains MEK, and it bonds to a lot of plastics really well, especially vinyl. Krylon also markets a paint formulated specifically for painting plastics.Another: spray lacquer. Again, the volatile solvent content means that this stuff bonds really well with a lot of plastics. Too much, too heavy, though, and it might alligator. Something worth noting is that a lot of the big automotive paint companies sell interior/plastic panel paint that is little more than lacquer.Plastikote also formulates interior panel paint in black. you can pick it up from your favorite auto parts store.

I knew it was an 84. First car I ever owned
1/2/2007 2:37:20 AM
yeah Krylon, but sometimes they come out to be too shiny. Not sure if you can buy non-gloss paints.

If you use the Krylon, make sure you let it cure the FULL time. And follow the directions to the LETTER. Last time I used the Krylon Fusion line (that's the formulated shit for plastics), it specified to cure/set for 7 full days, and believe me they mean it. Put on the Krylon, let em sit for a week and THEN clearcoat if you want it shiny. Otherwise you will end up with a permanently tacky surface that will get fucked up in 6 months of normal contact wear.

I know of a mint condition 86 Vette with ~36k miles sitting in a barn. I've already dropped the hint that they should let me know when they decide to sell it.

I've tried them all- SEM Landau Black is the best stuff money can buy. For $12/can, it should be.

^^^this one is a barn car also. it was pretty well used before it was parked in the mid 90's though. it's really not that bad, all the "key" areas to look for in a c4 are good.thanks for the replys, i believe gk2004 has my solution.

I have some C4 manuals and such. Ill see if I can find them if your interested

sure

shit i like the burgudy interior. that 91 RS i was going to buy was white with red interior and it looked cool. i wouldnt have built it that way, but the fact it was built that way gave it some character.
1/2/2007 1:23:14 PM
it's probably going to get a paint change also, not sure what yet. that's one reason i decided to go black, it goes with anything. the white isn't stock, it was a dark red originally. i like the post 86 red interiors, but this carmine color is pretty hideous imo. not to mention it's hard to find any used parts in that color that are in good condition, and i'm not about to pay the premium vendors want for new stuff. i got a deal i couldn't pass up on the majority of the black parts i need from a 91.

nice, cross fire injection, wasn't that around for a total of 2 years?
1/3/2007 12:09:49 AM
yeah, 2 or 3. it's really not THAT bad of a system, it's gotten a bad reputation because of idiots that don't understand it and can't work on it. makes power just as well as the tpi setup that followed, and is just as reliable when it's maintained/repaired properly. it responds EXTREMELY well to intake porting, as in .3-.5 off a 1320 time... i think crossfire shit was around for a while on some gm v6 wasnt it?
1/3/2007 12:39:16 AM
not that i'm aware of, but i don't really know. all i know is it was used on the vette and v8 f-body.
1/3/2007 12:52:37 AM
TPI setups are dirt cheap @ the swap meets($200-300) If you were interested in changing it
1/3/2007 7:58:05 AM
fuck that, Crossfire4Life son. Gotta love all 217hp of that 84 stock vette.
1/3/2007 9:36:24 AM
^more like 205hp they make good torque though, 390 lbs./ft. iirc.^^nothing is gained from a tpi swap. no advantages come until you get into more serious internal engine mods, where th aftermarket supports tpi ALOT more.[Edited on January 3, 2007 at 2:41 PM. Reason : .]
