I'm nervous about starting my first thread in Sports Talk, but here goes.http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?page=061221two-sportchartAn interesting look at what schools are the best in football and basketball combined. Some of the rankings are surprising. It's amazing how some schools are so good at one and so bad at the other. I mean, some I can understand (Duke, for instance), but take a school like Penn State (#71 out of 119). They have incredible resources, how are they that bad at basketball?

I hope that was an attempt at sarcasm
12/21/2006 7:30:56 PM

12/21/2006 7:31:29 PM
yeah can't complain with 24 overall.we beat USC Trojans too[Edited on December 21, 2006 at 7:32 PM. Reason : j]

That's pretty interesting, I would not have thought we would be that high up.I think what is frustrating is that we always decent at both and never great at either. I think most would prefer the latter.

Some schools only care about certain sports or focus mainly on one major sport.PSU IS football.. They dont care as much about basketball. We've had a minor identity crisis the last 20 years. We used to focus mainly on bball and football was second fiddle. Then we had a huge disaster in bball and it fell apart, then we focused on football and achieved some minor success and national notarity. Currently there is a spark of interest in bball due to Coach Lowe and a return to a segment of our "glory years". The next few years look promising in football as well so we'll see if we can be good with both sports at the same time.

that list means everything
12/21/2006 7:54:26 PM

12/21/2006 8:22:49 PM
haha, how the hell are we 24??
12/21/2006 8:26:24 PM
I believe Ohio State might move up a BIT after both seasons conclude this year.
12/21/2006 8:28:27 PM
definitely no UNC bias hereawesome to be #24
12/21/2006 8:29:34 PM
good thing we got rid of the coach that made that possible
12/21/2006 8:55:27 PM
^^yeah, definitely surprised to see us at #24 especially with some of the good schools below us[Edited on December 21, 2006 at 8:55 PM. Reason : f]
12/21/2006 8:55:34 PM
^^and florida fired a coach 2 years ago too. you're the man.
12/21/2006 9:01:51 PM
Um... this is over the past FIVE years (2 of which PRiv was here) and Sendek helps that stat as jprince said...I dig this list GO STATE
12/21/2006 9:10:55 PM
I support any list that puts us ahead of UNC and ECU. Although, I didn't agree with Maryland being that high.
12/21/2006 9:16:07 PM
I don't understand why Utah is so low. They did produce the #1 draft picks in both basketball and football recently.
12/21/2006 9:22:06 PM
love the list...GO PACKAnything better than UNC and DUKE makes me happy
12/21/2006 9:48:49 PM
^^ i'm pretty sure thats not factored into sagarin ratings.
12/22/2006 3:55:17 AM
Florida and Ohio State
12/22/2006 7:59:02 AM
without reading any of this thread i'd have to say osu...isnt their basketball team good and of course the football team
12/22/2006 8:01:41 AM
fuck, OSU is fucking overrated as hell, for that matter the whole fucking big 10 is over rated as fuck in basketball....
12/22/2006 8:59:01 AM
How is BC #6? No one cares about BC.Hire BC's AD!
12/22/2006 9:38:05 AM
OSU is overrated in basketball? Please enlighten me. Have you seen them play? Have you seen the class they brought in? Have you seen them these past couple years? They're a solid basketball team that is now probably the best team in the nation. I guess you could call that overrated
12/22/2006 9:58:01 AM
ezu 104th. haha.
12/22/2006 10:42:38 AM
kinda hard not to be seeing as how the basketball team is awful and always has been, and football was at it's worst for the last few years. aside from this year and last.but they still beat state
12/22/2006 10:44:19 AM
it is just cummulative sagarin ratings......so there will be no bias. this isn't a subjective list, there's no reason to be shocked by any of the results.geez herb and chuck got ncsu to 24.....now they are gone?
12/22/2006 10:51:26 AM
Well...there will be some bias based on the way Jeff Sagarin does his computer rankings. But in general, you're right, this is about as close to an objective list as you can get.
12/22/2006 11:12:05 AM
#24, In Hodge we trust
12/22/2006 12:01:24 PM
Growing up in PA and being a Penn State fan when I was younger.. I can honestly say nobody watches/cares/even knows about the baskteball team... Football is life.[Edited on December 22, 2006 at 12:04 PM. Reason : Paterno is old]
