I take my guy to the groomer at the kennel next to the hospital I work at. Armadale Farm Kennel. Both Hope and Carol have done him and they're both great. Not sure what regular visits cost since I get a discount.

Wheezer, what is that gland on a dog's ass that you have to squeeze? I had dogs as a kid growing up and I never knew that when you had them groomed that they had to have that done. I assume that our vets did it, but then I was also a kid and didn't need to know about it.

anal gland

Yes, it's the Anal gland - dogs actually have two sets: internal and external. Your veterinarian will express the internal glands, while we, groomers, will only express the external glands. If you want to know where they're at - gently lift your dog's tail and take your thumb and fore finger and press them gently under the dog's rectum at 5 and 8 (like on a clock). You should be able to feel two round pea shaped glands right there. I personally don't express them unless the owner requests it, or if the dogs are over the age of 9 or 10 and are a small breed. Dogs should be able to express them on their own when they poop, and once you start expressing them manually, a lot of the time, you'll have to keep doing it. If you happen to miss a couple of months of not getting it done, the dog could experience a blockage of the glands, which could lead to discomfort and possible infection. eh, lots of information. So, I can do a maltipoo for about $30-38, depending on what you want.

so why do you have to push these glands in again?

I don't have a dog now, I was just wondering about it because I had seen it on Dirty Jobs on Discovery channel and was telling someone about it the other day. Thanks for the info, though.[Edited on December 18, 2006 at 7:08 PM. Reason : good to know when I get a house and dog later]

It's actually kind of funny ya'll mentioned the whole anal gland thing because she's been licking her butt lately and I saw her scoot her bottom on the floor the other day. My freind told me thats a sign that she needs her anal glands expressed. So she doesn't need a haircut to bad right now, just a little trim. Shes got really bad tear stains to. I've never figured out how to get rid of them. Any advice on that?

tear stain remover/dog eye wash/saline?
12/19/2006 3:25:06 PM
Tear stains are actually caused by Red Yeast that will grow from the moist environment that is provided from the ears produced. Check out this web site: http://www.bbird.biz and I think it's called angels glow.from the product details: "Angels' Glow 30 gramAngels' Glow works by inhibiting the creation of red yeast which forms reddish brown stains under the eyes of many dogs, especially white dogs. The product contains a small amount of the antibacterial agent Tylosin in a palatable base. Just a sprinkle a day on the dog's food will eliminate further staining from within. Used daily for three months, then four times a week and eventually just twice a week. A 30-gram bottle is about a month's supply for a small dog."

there aren't two sets of anal glands, just one pair. you can express them internally or externally.
12/19/2006 11:27:19 PM
Externally, kthx. If you do decide to get the anal glands done you'll have to do it on a regular basis. FYIHowever if the dog isn't doing it on it's own thenyou don't have much of a choice anyways. [Edited on December 20, 2006 at 1:16 AM. Reason : Yummy anal glands...]
