does anyone have any firsthand experience using them? For storage and/or for moving?

They're pretty expensive.[Edited on December 10, 2006 at 11:24 PM. Reason : and inaccessible. I think you'd be happier with ministorage.]

I thought this thread said 'POGS' when I clicked on it

I don't know about moving, but there's mini-storage on every corner in this town. I wouldn't store any personal items in a container that gets thrown on a truck.

Just the fact that POGS were mentioned made me laugh

I had them for awhile when my work had me traveling a lot. I would visit Raleigh often enough and the storage location was off of Industrial Drive in Morrisville. I was content...Then one day I went to get something from my POD. I made an appointment and showed up to find nothing. They moved the entire operation (without notification) to the Alston Ave area of Durham. If you know that area, you'll understand why I had the POD delivered to my garage the following Monday and cancelled my account.

how does PODS work? They just drop off a box, you pack it, they haul it? Is it a flat fee for X amount of time or is it daily/weekly? I'd use it for large furniture and books - no breakables or valuables - while house hunting.

REASON FOR BTTTING: what are some POD alternatives?i've found Door to Door Storage Inc., Smart Move, and SAM and was wondering if anyone knew of any local alternatives (moving from fayetteville to raleigh)the main reason for wanting one is just so i can take my time packing and only need one trip - i don't really need it for storage

Old ISO container and moving service?

talk about perfect timing, I was just looking into this myself.I'm going to be moving from Cary to Lexington, KY late next month. Well, I'll move from here, but i won't be moving in in Lexington until May. I'll be bouncing around for training in between now and then in various places so I can't just have a mover come and drop stuff off at my place in KY. I need it to be stored for 6-7 months and i don't really want to drive up to KY just to put the stuff in a mini-storage if a POD company can store it for you.Anyone know if they provide anything with the pods? Boxes, furniture pads, etc...?

I just got a few quotes in from different companies offering the pod things and every one of them is about $500-$1000 more than it would cost to rent a u-haul truck I was really hoping I wouldn't have to drive one of those up there and do that myself

I think I looked up the price for one once and quickly started loading a borrowed van. You're not moving across the country are you?

I know someone who lived in an unlocked one for a few monthshe said it was cold

If you can afford to let go of some cash for a while you could always buy a large enclosed trailer and lock your stuff up in it. Maybe family or friends have a spot where you can safely park it. Then just sell it when you're done to recoup your money. The total cost should be next to nothing as long as you shop around and get a good deal when buying.

hmm, there's a thought
9/22/2008 11:01:39 AM
good idea ^^[Edited on September 22, 2008 at 11:03 AM. Reason : i sold a 6x12 enclosed for $1750 about 6 months ago. they aren't that bad really]

if that thing flips over on you, you are fucked

just got a quote from u-pack.com for a 28' trailer. They only charge you for the space you use. They estimated my stuff would take up 10' and just quoted me $1100 to go door-to-door from here to KS. +/- $50 for any footage I don't use/extra I use
