I was looking at getting an Alpine CDE-9852 CD Player w/ the Alpine KCE-422i iPod Cable. I was wondering how fast it is searching through artists and whatnot on the deck. Is it almost as fast as the ipod itself? Any input would be nice...

I have a 9857 with the kce-422i. Only thing I like about it is that it charges the ipod. Other than that I'd rather have bought the cable that has a changer plug on one end and A/v's on the other. Don't have time to find it now, I'll find it when I get back from class if you haven't before then.Searching through the head unit takes forever to answer your question. I usually just unplug the ipod, find the song, and then plug it back in.

hmm, jw cause my stuff is pretty organized but i read that it was supposed to be faster than any other headunits (ones that you control the ipod through the deck, not ones where you control through the actual ipod itself).

Sorry, mine is the KCA-420i, not the 422. Maybe they fixed it.On mine, it's not so much that it's slow, it's just too complicated. It's so much easier to do it on the Ipod. Here's a link to what I was talking about before:http://www.crutchfield.com/S-kOFuRxmurM9/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=KCA%2D121B&i=500KCA121B

the new one im taking about is just a cable thats supposed to be a high speed connection and you use the knob on the front of the cd deck to scroll through the artists, albums, etc...

Yep, I looked at it while I was finding that link. I assume it probably scrolls the same way as mine. Basically you use the volume knob like the scroll pad. Problem is, theres no back or up button like the menu button on the ipod. So if you accidently get the wrong album or artist, you have to start at the top. Not really a big deal, but after a while I just gave up and started unpluging the ipod to find what I wanted to hear. The price has gone down a lot too though. I think crutchfield has the 422i for like 30 bucks. The 420i cost me 100, which is part of why I was disappointed. The other cable was 15, plus another 5 or so for an RCA - Stereo plug cable, so I would go for the 422i if for no other reason than charging the ipod. Make sure you have a 2006 or newer head unit though. Older models don't have the plug for it.

i was thinking the 9852 w/ the kce-422i cable from crutchfield...they throw in the connector cables for your type of car free...

Sounds like a winner. Crutchfield is great, have done business with em several times with great results each time. Products ship quick, and they even pay return shipping if you have problems or change your mind. Enjoy.
