12/4/2006 2:00:51 PM
Hey we need CSC too.Yes, classes are taught in English. It is very safe here. It is a small city, and not a single attack has taken place ever.Whites have been teaching here for the past 8 years.WARNING: There isn't much to do here (in the big cities of SA, there is, but this city is dead). BUT, the money is great, esp. if you want to save some for a year or two for whatever reason that you might have.

Not trying to knock trappy's post here, but he says it's tax free - this is partially true. SA wont charge you taxes but you can bet the US government will. That is, of course, unless you don't plan on coming back.

No, only if your employer is based in the US are you taxed at US rates. IE: Military, multi national company etc. Technically though you have to pay taxes where you live if you don't pay US taxes and you can get in a shitload of trouble. HOWEVER....You can only bring so much money into the US per year before penalties. I think it's $10,000. This was bypassed by a family member of mine who had several family members bring in $9000ish every visit. Then he found out Canada doesn't give a shit and set up an account over there and just withdrew money in the US from a Canadian bank and paid the $5 convenience fee.

my guess is arranged marriages
12/5/2006 9:59:02 AM
Do they have like, brokers for that?
12/5/2006 11:34:22 AM
^, ^^, ^^^Yes, most marriages (Saudis) are arranged, and more often than not, with a first cousin.P.S. And yes, they do have matchmakers. But mostly, since it is usually between first cousins, their services are not required.I met my girl (British) when I was working as a teacher in a British school in Jeddah (the best city there), and she was (and is) a teacher in another British school in Jeddah, and we both went to a Valentine's Day party at a compound. Those who sent me a PM, I will get back to you soon. Thanks.[Edited on December 5, 2006 at 3:56 PM. Reason : ]

What kind of students are there. I know when I lived in the kingdom I went to an international school so it was a huge range of nationalities. However, from looking at the homepage of the website you linked it looks more like it was just Saudis (not that that is a bad thing). Also, is the town growing at all, I know when my family first moved to Dhahran there wasn't shit. I think the only channel we could watch was some Aramco nature channel. When I left it had come a LONG ways.

the weddings are the only place women can get wild, and only because the groom is the only man thereknock yourself out with that
12/5/2006 6:31:06 PM
^^^Because it is a government university, the students are all Saudis. The town is very small (~200,000), and is growing slowly, but an artificial growth spurt is about to take place very soon at a cost of $8 billion. Check out http://www.pabmec.com/en.php for details. (Along the lines of projects in Dubai) And also check out http://www.kingabdullahcity.com/en which is another artificial city planned near Jeddah, at a cost of $27 billion (world's largest private sector investment project).BTW, what school did you go to.^ The weddings are segregated as well. The men are in one hall, and the women in another. There is absolutely no mixing, and the couple are never seen together. BUT, the women DO go wild in their hall, with wild dances and risque dresses, at least the ones who are not so conservative.
12/6/2006 1:59:07 AM
a risque dance is like what? something where the hips move?
12/6/2006 2:01:16 AM

I was looking at the pay --Even tax free and accomodation provided I have to wonder, is that a decent salary for a starting lecturer or professor? What is the going rate for lecturer/professor starting salary in the U.S.?
1/8/2007 1:23:55 PM
starting salary for a lecturer in the US is about 45,000give about 12-15 to tax, leaves you 30-32.spend a min of 6-8 on accomodation. leaves you 22,000-26,000 net.whereas this is 38,400 net.now of course, if you want to be hired as an assistant professor, that is another story.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 1:57 PM. Reason : not to mention, everything here is a lot cheaper (food, gas, etc)]
1/8/2007 1:51:41 PM
So what do you do for entertainment? Do you have a good internet connection? Television?
1/8/2007 3:51:27 PM
television, yes, good choice of channels. (you have to buy your own tv, though)internet at the university is alright, not terribly fast. about 512 kbps, i would say.internet in housing is being installed as i type. don't know how fast it will be.best thing is to get to know people, and get close to 1 or 2 people (if it happens, it happens, if it doesn't, you can't force it).i have come to know a colleague really well, and we are very close buddies, even though we have known each other only 3 months. (he is from nyc)we hang out and have a lot of fun just shooting the shit and going out to eat, and watcing tv, etc.no real entertainment possible here.
1/8/2007 5:11:54 PM
outside of the university environment, what is the general attitude of saudis towards foreigners and particularly non-arabs?
1/8/2007 5:34:36 PM
depends on where you are from.are you a caucasian american? if so, people will love you.wherever i go with my friend, people are all over him. they want to talk to him, want their picture taken with him, want him to take their picture, offer him food and drink, invite him to their houses, etc, and these are all strangers from the street!but, it is also him--he loves to talk to random people on the street. all he has to say is "hi" and then they just love him and start chatting.if you are anything else, let me know, so that i can tell you what attitude to expect.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 5:39 PM. Reason : ^ so why couldn't you do this?]
