So Im having problems with the 96 Jeep Cherokee, a lot of the time it doesnt start unless you put it in neutral and wiggle the steering wheel, and now for some reason something is draining the battery, Im on the third new battery in a week because every time I come out to the car the battery has been drained. So Im looking for a reputable shop around here that does electrical work on a Jeep. any suggestions?

i could look at it this weekend, but it sounds like you have several issues not just one, the battery drain shouldn't be hard to find, and the starting problem is just a safety switch out of adjustment, but it is a cherokee, and who knows what other problems there might be. if you feel fairly comfortable with it, you can disconnect the negative battery cable, put and amp meter across it and check the drain, should be less than 50 milliamps, if it is more, i would disconnect the alternator and see if the drain goes away, if not, then start yanking fuses

Golovko: thanks for the smart ass reply, but its got 195k miles, its worth nothing, it would be better to keep it because of the utility69: unfortunately I dont have an AMP meter up here with me, and the auto parts store tested the Alternator when they put the third battery in, and supposedly its good.

to fix your starting problem, it sounds like you need to clean your neutral safety switch (NSS)http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.aspit seems to be the most common reason for a xj not starting in park[Edited on December 1, 2006 at 1:05 AM. Reason : ]

on the vehicle you can only test but so much, ripple current and diode failure is hard to diagnose unless you bench test it
