Quote :
"Edward Wilson, the only witness to his father's suicide and member of the Skull and Bones Society while a student at Yale, is a morally upright young man who values honor and discretion, qualities that help him to be recruited for a career in the newly founded Central Intelligence Agency. While working there, his ideals gradually turn to suspicion influenced by the Cold War paranoia present within the office. Eventually, he becomes an influential veteran operative, while his distrust of everyone around him increases to no end. His dedication to his work does not come without a price though, leading him to sacrifice his ideals and eventually his family."

I just saw this movie today. I was incredibly disappointed. I didn't know the first thing about it when going in, so I didn't have any expectations. Thank goodness for that because I surely would have been let down. After reading the reviews, it looks like I am in the vast minority in disliking this movie (at least as far as the critics go) but I would seriously give this movie a 3/10 if I was feeling generous. I almost feel like I need to go back and watch it a few more times to pick up on everything that was going on, but I already wasted 3 hours of my life on it, there's no way I'm watching it multiple times. Too long, too confusing, too boring, no action, and no overall point to the movie. Very disappointing.

I'm usually attracted to action movies, i thought it might be a nice change to check out an interesting story... It wasn't all that great, it was mostly dull and kinda jumped around a lot so it was hard to understand whats going on at first, and drags on for a lengthy 3 hours.

It wasn't memento or anything, but it did jump around a bit. That wasn't my issue.

It was just an incredibly boring and uneventful movie with little to no overall point.

The "big surprise" (and reason for all the jumping around with the timeline) became painfully obvious about halfway through the movie. Then when it's "revealed" you're left wondering what the point was.

I guess I missed it.

if you're not into a ficticious account of how the CIA was formed and why the Bay of Pigs invasion wasn't a success...then you probably won't like this movie

if you don't like spies and how the work spies do interferes with their family life...then you probably won't like this movie

it's a pretty damn good movie for what it is

but it's by no means an action movie...its a thinking movie

and the "big surprise" was pretty obvious to me from the start...but I guess that's just me

movie looks good to me

i heard that during filming, damon was getting so entrenched in his character's paranoia/secrecy that deniro wanted to keep an eye on him

anyway, anybody know a torrent? holla

I guess that's a fair enough assessment. I would also wager that a huge majority of americans fall into this category. Which makes me wonder why they thought they could get so many big name stars with mass appeal, put them in a 3 hour snoozefest with no action or overall point to speak of and have it be a successful movie.

I just don't see how the audience was supposed to care even a little bit about how it affected his family. Not when the onscreen time spent developing his relationship was less than 5 minutes. Hell, the real-time amount of time appeared to be less than 3 months. To me, the story wasn't so much how the job affected his family life as it was about how some poor guy got railroaded into being in a family that he had no interest in having in the first place.

Quote :

I just don't see it. They spent about half an hour absolutely RUSHING damon's character into the main part of the movie. Are we as viewers supposed to actually believe that a 22 year old guy could practically single handedly be handed the keys running an entire World War? There was absolutely no backstory or reason given for why he was selected for the Skulls (except for his father was a traitor, which I would think would work against him) There was even less reason given for why some kid straight out of school (or was he still in school? it was impossible to tell) was set up in a meeting with an Army General who for absolutely no given reason assigns him to run what appears to be the entire american pre-official-engagement war effort.

All throughout the movie it felt like it tried to do too much and ended up half-assing it all. When I think back on it, I actually would have been interested in many of the things I just discussed, but not nearly enough time was spent on the little details that would have made it work. I would imagine this movie was probably adapted from a book that went into much greater detail. And honestly I would probably be interested in reading that book. Maybe this movie would have worked better as a miniseries, where it could have taken the time to properly do all the things it tried to do in 3 hours. I dunno, but it surely didn't work for me. And I don't think that was because I wasn't in the target audience. Because the thought of this:

"but it's by no means an action movie...its a thinking movie"

doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Agreed. I'd also throw out that I found the movie interesting, though can't explain why and wouldn't buy it on DVD.

just got done seeing this boring, depressing movie...I would not recommend anyone to see this movie except people with a huge fascination of the CIA.

I like "spy" type movies, and I did think that a movie labelled as being the fictional beginnings of the CIA would be entertaining, especially with the big name talent that is involved.

I was, however, bored throughout the movie, I found Matt Damon's character to be pretty unlikeable (even though I know that this is part of the movie), I was waiting for the last 45+ minutes of the movie for it to wrap up and find a conclusion, and once the conclusion came I wasnt pleased with the outcome.

Overall, I came away from the movie depressed and bored. I kept up with the storyline from beginning to end, so my reason for disliking the movie wasnt due to a lack of knowing what was going on, it was more of a feeling that I wasnt pleased with the events that occurred in the movie. I would have much rather taken my $6 to watch Rocky Balboa or some other movie that wasnt as long and boring.

The only good things about the movie to me was Matt Damon's acting job - he portrayed his character VERY well, Angelina Jolie's hotness factor during the first half of the movie, and the presence of Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci

his character was unlikeable, but that is probably what he and De Niro were going for. I think he did a good job portraying that sort of character, if that makes better sense

I was captivated from start to finish and was certainly up to the challenge of keeping up with the changes in time and subplots

great film

his character was likeable

i liked him

but i guess i'm the only one who liked the movie

you know who wasn't likeable? his buddy Hayes...that guy was slimy

but Damon's character was a man of principles, who struggled with trying to stand by those principles in spite of what life wanted to throw at him

The best part of the movie was when he's talking to Joe Pesci and says "We have the United States of America. The rest of you are just visiting."

i took their interest in him stemming from his outting of the prof AND because he didn't have any record of being in intelligence.

I kind of admire Wilson's (Damon's character) ability to stick to his beliefs and job so well, but some of the ways that he went about doing so coupled with the fact that he didnt talk/joke/show emotion made it hard for me to like him

I thought it was good but I like that type of movie and could see how people were disinterested

I also did not like the casting choice of Angelina Jolie, she didn't really fit that persona and was obviously just a big name to get people to go see it

Yeah, it was better than when I went to see Ricky Bobby. That is, I managed to sit through this whole movie and not get mad about the $7 it cost me.

It was a battle though to keep my gf awake, and it hilarious how many other people fell asleep.

when pesci dropped the "at least the nigger have their music" line i looked over at the 5 black people in the theater expecting a gasp, but it was all snores. they were all asleep.

i heard a gasp or two (saw it at crossroads). i was thinking "welcome to the 50s dumbasses."

check that. the gasps were from when he said "All of you are just visiting"

if you enjoy using your brain and thinking about what was going on in the world during the time of the movie and how it all ties in to said movie, it was great!

if you want mindless entertainment have a hand party instead.
