Plasma has burn-in. Aside from that, it's really up to you... buy whichever one you think looks the best. Make sure you know how much you can afford, but don't be afraid to spend it. Nothing worse than buying a TV, and then wanting to upgrade.

i bought the 50" toshiba (http://tinyurl.com/ykmqx3) and the tv stand (http://tinyurl.com/ymmefu) after camping out at best buy and good lord was it worth it. hd cable looks incredible and i don't even have an hdmi cable yet...hd dvd is amazing and gears of war is a completely different game after playing on an old 47" panasonic hd projection tv.

I would at least run a dvd with some kind of break in patterns for the first 100-200 hours. Burn in is not a myth, but is often confused with image retention IR. In other words you would have to screw up on epic proportions to permantly etch something into the screen, but dont be alarmed if you see ESPN ghosting for 5 hours after a football game.

Honestly, if you get caught up in reading the specs and all the differences each manufacturer tells you "notice", you will never be happy with anything you buy. Fact of the matter is ANYTHING you buy is probably better than what you came from.

i keep the standard cable stretched to avoid the black bars, but are the horizontal letterbox bars when watching a dvd any risk or burn-in? it may be a dumb question and i'm using the break-in dvd, but i was just wondering.

i would assume that there are more "fixed images" in video games like a health bar or something similar...if that's way off, someone will correct me, but from what i've read...burn in is the only downside of video games and most high def games now are aware of that and don't have fixed images for too long.

I'm being very careful and watching everything in Zoom temporarily, but after putting a couple hundred hours on it, I'll be a little less careful.

i've watched a few dvds not zoomed in and the rest either hd broadcasts or zoomed cable...i will avoid the vertical black bars at all costs, but i don't want to sacrifice dvd or hd-dvd quality...i'm gonna keep using that burn-in dvd overnight for a few nights...now watch my xbox die because of lots of use

yeah my gf is watching chris botti live on hdnet right now and the "mood colors" look friggin amazing...when i go to bed i'm putting the break-in dvd on and i'm gonna give the tv and the 360 a break while i'm at work, unless i hear that running the tv and 360 for 20 hours straight isn't a bad thing

It doesn't have an HDMI input, although I'm not convinced that's the end of the world - component video tends to look more warm & natural. It's brightness leaves a little bit to be desired. A 1000:1 Contrast Ratio is nothing to brag about, especially on a plasma television. The silver bezel looks neat, but a TV with a black bezel will appear to be higher contrast, which is what everyone wants.

For $899, I guess it wouldn't be the worst purchase you could make, but I would wait until your budget accommodates the standard price range of a plasma television. Standard prices (not the $1300 Panasonic deals on Black Friday - that doesn't happen all that often) will be $2000 or more for a 42", unless you purchase the panel online. Purchasing a plasma television online makes about as much sense as eating a bag of hair, in my opinion. I make a living off of selling plasma televisions, however, so I guess I'm a bit biased.

There's nothing wrong with purchasing a TV online; the problem is when people purchase a TV having never seen it anywhere.

Again, since I make a living on selling products like plasma televisions and surround sound systems, I am of course biased on where I feel one should make such a purchase.

The scenario that resellers like myself (I don't prefer to use the term "retailer", as I rarely sell anything for "retail" price...) get very tired of very quickly is when someone makes the online purchase and then expects us to come out, install it for nothing, calibrate it for nothing, and then when something is wrong with the tv, it must be our fault... Those are the people that I would like to see avoid buying the panels online - the ones that have no idea what they're buying. The ones that do know what they're buying are few and far between, and often don't call on a professional in the first place.
