http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/11/21/obit.altman.ap/index.htmlThis guy was a fucking master. It's a shame his last movie had to be A Prairie Home Companion, but he will definitely be missed.I guess it's time for PTA to fully take the reins. [Edited on November 21, 2006 at 12:02 PM. Just saw it at the top of http://www.cnn.com
11/21/2006 12:01:19 PM
i guess it's kind of apt that APC was his last movie, considering the 'closing up shop' subject matter
11/21/2006 12:20:35 PM
There's nothing shameful about A Prairie Home Companion. It's a fine movie. [Edited on November 21, 2006 at 12:30 PM. Reason : ...]

Finally, now we don't have to deal with his shitty movies anymore.
11/21/2006 2:06:19 PM
I didn't know anyone had to deal with his movies before. But I guess you're right, now that that hack is out of the way we can look forward to the next epic, Gronke picture.[Edited on November 21, 2006 at 2:10 PM. Reason : ...]

That man is one of those "I've made a handful of good movies early in my career so now everything I shit on is going to turn out gold" kind of people. Hell, even reviewers for "The Company" said that the film was mediocre but that "diehard altman fans will probably think it is oscar worthy."
11/21/2006 2:12:29 PM
You're right, because The Company (a movie about fucking ballet dancers!) sucked then the entire career of a prolific filmmaker should be illegitimatized.

MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN[Edited on November 21, 2006 at 2:52 PM. Reason : ^I like The Company......Nashville is my favorite though]

who the hell are these people
11/21/2006 2:46:08 PM
some crackas
11/21/2006 3:11:05 PM
I can name a string of shitty movies he has done:The CompanyDr. T. and the WomenCookie's FortuneThe Gingerbread ManKansas CityJazz '34Pret-a-PorterVincent and TheoBeyond Therapyand that's just the last 10 years...Not to mention Brewser McCloud is one of my worst film experiences, and Three Women is one of the most overrated shitty metaphorical peices of crap I've ever laid eyes on.If you look at his films he has an average of below 6 on most of them, the only good rated ones are Short Cuts, Nashville, Mash, McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Point is, the guy lived on for too long and was way too prolific. Stanley Kubrick lived roughly the exact same time span (a tad shorter) and only made around 14 feature films which are all excellent, compared to Altman's 100+.Oh and finally:[Edited on November 21, 2006 at 3:41 PM. ^^I can't comment on most of those movies as I haven't seen them. However, I do take umbrage with you saying
11/21/2006 3:57:56 PM
He DID live too long. He had another person's heart for years. That's an affront to God.
11/21/2006 4:04:29 PM
^^ No, I'm saying that he had the output rate of a bollywood filmmaker. I'd rather him have produced 10 awesome movies than 100 shitty ones.
11/21/2006 4:19:18 PM
He directed 36 feature films.
11/21/2006 4:31:35 PM
im gonna go out and say I had no idea who this dude was before I clicked this thread

fuckthis is the saddest i've ever been from a celebrity deathI was actually just listening to his commentary on the prairie home companion dvd last night, hoping he had a few films left in him
11/21/2006 5:08:36 PM
i have no idea who he is either

37 movies from 1970 to 2006 = 1 per year = too much. That's practically making movie after movie without delay, if you include pre and post production. My main problem that I have with Altman, that I've had since I had the "Stanley Kubrick and Robert Altman" class at NCSU, is that he has no comprehensible style. Aside from having overlapping audio and casting Shelley Duvall in every fucking movie he makes he has absolutely no "vision" or "metaphor" in any of his films that make any sense. He completely shoots a hole in the auteur theory.

mozart totally sucked because he wrote so much music too.
11/21/2006 5:58:28 PM
I give up. I guess I'll have to find some people who don't have Altman's dick in their collective mouths.
11/21/2006 6:01:17 PM
i'm not really a big altman fan, but your logic is terrible.[Edited on November 21, 2006 at 6:03 PM. Reason : n]

11/22/2006 1:12:11 AM

Altman and Allen are both great American filmmakers who produced a large number of movies. After that, the similarities (as pertaining to film) between the two end.[Edited on November 23, 2006 at 4:11 PM. Reason : ...]

I don't think Allen's more recent stuff lives up to some of the earlier ones (mainly 1970s-1980s) by any means, but that's just my opinion.
11/23/2006 4:34:06 PM
^his recent stuff may not live up to the quality of his early stuff, but that doesn't mean they aren't quality. And I'd say as recently as Sweet and Lowdown (1999) his quality remained as high as it was at his peak. Now, I agree that he hasn't been quite as high in most recent years. But "not-quite-as-high" Woody Allen can still be immensly enjoyable and significantly better than most.
