http://www.snowshoemtn.com/lodging/village-central/index.htmAlleghany SpringsBest price, decent rooms, and REALLY: village central is where you want to stay. Ski in/out, no bussrides. They do bus you to night skiing areas if you want, though-- but you can drive too. Snowshoe's gotta be the best east coast skiing....

Bonus advice: Book early, this place fills up

mid-week is cheaper and will be less crowded

i'm trying to get up there at some point this winter too, i've never been, heard it's pretty much the best thing going without going way up north or out west
11/20/2006 8:07:17 PM
snowshoe is the only real skiing you'll get within 10 hours of raleigh on the east coast

Reason : unless you consider skiing on ice TO BE TOTALLY RAD!!!1 TO THE MAXXXX][Edited on November 20, 2006 at 10:38 PM. Reason : .]

For all but the die hardest of skiier, snowshow can be a very good place for your time/money investment if you keep an eye on the snow report/weather conditions and you can get up there during the week.A buddy and I have an understanding that if the conditions are right (ie, a front drops 10-20 inches on the resort) during the week, we'll just take off and go and hammer it until our legs fall off.Sure beats packing all your shit up and paying big time fees for flight travel and lodging when all you need is a little fix to hold you over for awhile.

I love that place, but probably not going this year And yeah I think we stayed in AS last year like NyM410 said.

You can stay 30 minutes away at the Marlington Motor Inn for around $50/person per night, but with that many people you should be able to do better by getting a Snowshoe condo and loading up with air mattresses.http://www.marlintonmotorinn.com/

What in what you quoted warrants him being called a dumbass you shit for brains?
11/21/2006 11:20:51 PM
^^regardless, there's nothing better than Snowshoe within 10 HOURS driving time.

Ahhh....I'm going to Keystone for Christmas. I can't fucking wait. My 2nd ski trip out West. It only makes it that much harder to ski on the East.

^Have nice freezing buns, I'll be surfing in Costa Rica. As for Snowshoe, if you want really cheap and last minute your best bet is The Snowshoe Inn. The rooms are ehh, but are clean and have big beds, and there's a pool and hot tub and restaurants and all. Buuut, you have a short drive up the mountain, it's at the bottom, and everything else is at the top.
11/22/2006 10:01:24 AM
^that short drive is at least 20 minutes, more if you're stuck behind a slow SUV/Minivan or if there's snow/ice on the road. Its a PITA.

Snoeshoe is pretty good for Appalachian skiing. If you're going to drive more than 8 hours to go skiing, you might as well just buy a fucking plane ticket to Vail.
11/22/2006 4:23:29 PM
not when you have 4 ppl
11/22/2006 11:43:52 PM
what is the next best thing besides snowshoeI would like to go to snowshoe but the majority of people going wouldnt want to drive more than 4 hourswhats the best spot that is 3-4 hours away ?
11/23/2006 4:16:31 AM
^Probably buy a skiing or snowboarding video game.
11/23/2006 8:09:59 AM
it's worth the time to drive to snowshoe. you can get weekend packages for like $99
11/23/2006 11:30:20 AM
^^ how clever
11/23/2006 6:39:59 PM
Camp Four Townhouses are nice. Not sure about the price, I always go in a large group, but you can ski right out on to the slopes.
11/23/2006 11:41:06 PM
Wintergreen is pretty good, and closer than Snowshoe. They have a high speed lift that services two good, long(relatively), black runs
11/28/2006 7:52:51 AM
see that's my point though...not to be a ski snob or a rockies snob in general, but that was why i said there are no good mountains south of vermont...wintergreen is the best you can get ~3-4 hours out...but it's predominately ice. i for one would rather ski for real than just slide down the fucking mountain scraping the fuck out of my skis...but i definitely do it anyways because it's close
