Yes - $8 for students, $12 at the door for non-students. Advance tickets ($10) are available online or at Schoolkids Raleigh, Percolator, and Skate Ranch. You can also buy tickets in advance online at http://carolinarollergirls.com/shop.htmKids tickets are $5.Trust me, it's better than going out to watch some crappy movie, and the afterparty (usually at Kings) kicks ass.
11/16/2006 1:14:58 PM
do the chicks put out?
11/16/2006 1:27:21 PM
Depends on your game brother. I'd guess that about 1/3 are already hitched though.
11/16/2006 1:29:14 PM
bummer
11/16/2006 1:31:13 PM
Grasshopper,Sounds like you need to get your Game-chi together.-JS
11/16/2006 1:35:57 PM
If that picture of the girl's ass is the best you can muster, I think you should not worry about hooking up with these chicks.
11/16/2006 1:36:45 PM
You might want to come judge for yo' self. Some hot ladies, some not-as-hot ladies. Most of which could probably kick your ass, with skates on. That's kind of hot in and of itself.
11/16/2006 1:48:54 PM
flat track or banked
11/16/2006 1:54:41 PM
Flat track. There's only a few banked tracks left in the country, most of which are pieced together from tracks built back in the 50's and 60's. There are about 80 flat track leagues in the US, and only about 4-5 bank track teams if memory serves me correct.[Edited on November 16, 2006 at 2:03 PM. Reason : .]
11/16/2006 2:01:36 PM
why'd that change?
11/16/2006 2:06:12 PM
$ and facilities. Most of those tracks were junked after the heyday of the 50's, and they pretty much have to stay set up in a permanent place. Flat track derby can be done damn near anywhere with a decent surface. Dorton's got a smoothish concrete surface and is hurts if you fall wrong, but then again you slide more on it than on a good wood floor like the Skate Ranch. They (carolina rollergirls) are trying to get the $ up to buy a Sportcourt surface that'll give them a little more give, allow the track to be premanently painted on, and provide for some more sponsorship advertising space.Yes, I'm sort of dork for knowing this, but it is pretty cool learning about some of the history from just being around these folks all the time. Good group of people. Dysfunctional at times, but good group to be around. The bouts are fun as shit though. They had about 1,900 folks at Dorton at the last bout. That place was rockin, and that was the first time they played out there. It's now the permanent location for bouts.
11/16/2006 2:13:55 PM
I'll be out there on sunday
11/16/2006 2:40:12 PM
Give me a holler. I'm be taping the track down when it gets torn up. I'm the devilishly handsome tall dude with the beard.
11/16/2006 2:55:33 PM
I'll have to check this out. I ♥ Rollergirls.[Edited on November 16, 2006 at 3:05 PM. Reason : asdf]
11/16/2006 3:05:35 PM
They ran out of beer at the first bout, but are having 4x the amount of taps going this time around, including one tap in the arena itself instead of in the concourse. That's one beer drinking crowd.
11/16/2006 3:10:06 PM
I have always wanted to go to one of these
11/16/2006 3:18:03 PM
I'm considering going.

I wanna coach this. I have a friend who coaches the Tampa Bay Derby Darlings. Say, have you considered getting them for a match up here? I could hook you up...

I am friends with Fairy Brutal. I've volunteered for the derby and found the derby girls to be awesome. And the after party at Kings is usually killer. The last one I went to made me hate myself the next morning.
11/16/2006 5:35:24 PM
You gotta pace yourself at those damn things.
11/16/2006 7:08:37 PM
Good photo of the last bout at Dorton. I love that damn place. I overheard some guys at the last bout talking about seeing Ric Flair rasslin Wahoo McDaniel there twenty years ago. [Edited on November 16, 2006 at 10:00 PM. Reason : .]

1. the girls are fat has been punkrockers...hardly hot.2. shit is so fucking boring.3. last time they had a competition, dorton ran out of beer.ill never go again.
11/16/2006 10:07:32 PM
The Dorton folks are completely in charge of the concessions and beer sales. They didn't believe the CRG folks when they said to have an assload of beer ready. One tap sure as hell didn't cut it, and yes, they sold out of beer. The Dorton folks are making ammends with something like 4 taps, including one on the floor. Beer is not going to be a problem this time.
11/16/2006 10:14:20 PM
can we bring our own? pretty sure I won't like what they have for sale
11/16/2006 10:15:15 PM
There isn't enough beer in the world for me to watch this ogre skate.
11/16/2006 10:23:35 PM
You'd have to do it on the DL, and off-duty cops are doing the security. Just giving you the heads up.

I have my ticket from their first ever full scale bout around here somewhere, but haven't been to Dorton for one yet.I remember going to a WCW house show there and seeing Sting in his multicolored days, as well as seeing Tripp Tracy play goal against the Icecaps. Good times.
11/17/2006 1:39:01 AM
Lyle Wildegoose, greatest Ice Cap ever. And I saw Flair wrestle there at some point.

so is this a 'real' sport or is it like rastlin?
11/18/2006 8:10:53 AM
The banked track folks have to stage a bunch of stuff for safety, but there's nothing scripted with flat track derby. I know my ladyfriend practices 4-5 times a week, and most of these teams get together all the time to watch videos of recent matches to study up on their opponents, strategy sessions, different lineups, etc. Some of these ladies are pretty religious about this stuff, moreso than I ever was about intermurals or any rec-league stuff. The Carolina Rollergirls are ranked in the top 5-10 in the country from their bout results, mainly because they train so damn much. I'd get me ass kicked from any of their speed or endurance practices. Injuries are pretty common (broken collerbones, ankles, wrist injuries) as they have a tendency to beat the crap out of each other. You can't "hit" per se with a deliberate elbow, but you can knock the shit out of someone with an upper arm or shoulder. So yeah, I'd say it's a sport. If I was still in the academic side of recreation I'd probably do some journal article on it at some point. The league is still growing, but I'd bet there's going to be a plateau pretty soon. Some leagues are filled with folks who are really into the skating, sport, exercise, etc, but others are just a bunch of chicks that want to hang out and get tattoos.
