so, i just wanted to post to let everyone know what a horrible horrible thing avg is! for some reason it has great reviews, but it killed my hard drive and at least a few others. if you have it, get rid of it before it destroys yours! the automatic update is the last program that ever ran on mine.

here's some bad reviewshttp://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3640-2239_4-10596553.html?sb=3&v=0
11/11/2006 12:10:33 AM
that sucks, thanks for the warning
11/11/2006 1:24:33 AM
thanks for warning me on something i would have never tried anyway[Edited on November 11, 2006 at 1:28 AM. Reason : goodluck]

^sorry didn't realize the world existed only for you

i run AVG free on 2 different computers and never have had any issues with either.as for some of the comments on the link:
11/11/2006 1:35:53 PM
how long have you had avg? maybe it doesn't affect all computers, maybe its a combination with something else that screws it up. im just sharin some info that might be useful to others
11/11/2006 3:46:16 PM
i've used AVG for years. in fact i first used it on my gaming desktop and had symantec on my laptop and after realizing how much of a system hog symantec is, i switched my laptop to AVG.
11/11/2006 3:52:49 PM
im thinking the virus you didnt know how to get rid of killed your system, not avg
11/11/2006 3:58:46 PM
no, i didn't have a virus problem i had avg free as a precautionary measure
11/11/2006 4:16:58 PM
well how did it kill your hd
11/11/2006 4:24:29 PM
i have a hard time believing it did since there are so many positive reviews of this software.
11/11/2006 4:28:51 PM
the automatic update caused an error screen to pop up. that was the last thing my computer ever did. the hard drive is now unrecognizable to the system.
11/11/2006 4:39:21 PM
coincidence
11/11/2006 4:41:58 PM
11/11/2006 5:11:30 PM
^ yeah but what about all the other bad reviews saying the same exact thing?thats what made me stop and think about it.
11/11/2006 5:56:08 PM
find the % of bad to good reviews of AVG; i bet it is minuscule. there are always gonna be glitches with software people running in the background when installing software. hell even a virus on a system while installing software will cause major issues. and with how stupid people are in general when in comes to computers, it doesn't surprise me some people will have issues.[Edited on November 11, 2006 at 6:05 PM. i love avg
11/11/2006 6:16:57 PM
i bet ipods break more than avg.
11/12/2006 11:59:49 AM
keep in mind there are only 13 (1-star) reviews out of 296, out of 11,500,000+ downloads, i get the impression that this is rare occurrence.

Windows kills tens of thousands of hard drives per year. Windows was the last OS running on my last HDD and then one day it was dead.
11/12/2006 6:25:06 PM
so by boowex13's logic windows killed your hdd. but maybe it was just time for it to go.[Edited on November 12, 2006 at 6:31 PM. Reason : .]

user error killed boowex13's hard drive. he was at the computer when it died, so it's his fault.
11/13/2006 4:57:18 PM
the computer was only 2 years old, so i doubt it was really time for it to die. quit calling me a he damnit! and i wasn't at my computer, like i said it was an AUTOMATIC update that ran. and yes, im sure its a rare occurrence, but that doesn't mean it can't happen to you. oh yeah, and im sure ipods break more than avg, they suck.
11/13/2006 5:01:09 PM
Everyone on my side of the family uses AVG (beggars can't be choosers)
11/13/2006 5:02:22 PM
oh you're a chickwell that explains everything
11/13/2006 5:02:46 PM
he's a chick?
11/13/2006 8:15:41 PM
11/13/2006 9:27:26 PM
a bunch of people installed it and it caused their pc's to mess upso that would probably be the cause of the problemis that so hard to figure out
11/13/2006 11:14:30 PM
The only time i have EVER seen AVG or Avira mess up is when norton/macafee/ect was still partially loaded and scrwed the system when realtime protection was enabled. As long as you only use 1 at a time, never seen problems. Hell, a lot of the nc community colleges use AVG free, as it has a dos based scan on boot capbility for older systems. Dont see them lining up to blow money on an inferior product that charges for personal use.
11/13/2006 11:42:47 PM
a few out of thousands =/= a bunchseriously, this didnt kill her hd.
