I wanted to do an informal survey for people who have voted...I have heard from a number of radio callers today, voting both parties, from North Carolina and South Carolina in a number of different cities and towns...many of them said they were not asked to show ID when they went to their polling place to vote today...so how about you all?
11/7/2006 3:59:43 PM
noi had it out but she didn't seem interested in it
11/7/2006 4:00:31 PM
why does this not surprise melets get a bus load of bums and offer them cigs and md 20/20 to go vote
11/7/2006 4:05:05 PM
north carolina does not require a photo id.
11/7/2006 4:06:29 PM
I think (and I'm attempting to be 100% non partisan here) that regardless of who you vote for...with all of the reports (from both Dems and Reps) about voter fraud, vote machine tampering, etc...its quite important for each polling place to do THEIR part to assure a fair election, regardless of who wins...I wonder how many of the people who help run the polling places will fail to check hundreds if not thousands of IDs today, and then complain when there are discrepancies at their polling place^thats seems pretty dumb to me]
11/7/2006 4:06:57 PM
no, they just asked for my name and address.[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:07 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 4:07:00 PM
I was not asked for ID.The idea behind not asking for ID is that, since IDs aren't free, it amounts to a poll tax.I am still very uneasy about it, though. Anybody could have easily looked up my registration online after picking my name out of the phone book and voted in my stead.
11/7/2006 4:08:30 PM
11/7/2006 4:10:15 PM
noit is still one vote for one person, and you are preregistered, so i dont see what the real problem is. send someone else to vote for you? fine. if someone else votes in your place w/o your permission, then it will be found out. who would do that, though?inconvenience? who cares.[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:11 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 4:10:26 PM
how would it be found out (particularly if you don't end up voting)?
11/7/2006 4:11:27 PM
^^Well some past problems that I have heard about are:- people (or people's identities) voting more than once- dead people votingetcIt just seems in general that you would want the most accurate results from all parties, sides and polling places[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:11 PM. Reason : ^^]
11/7/2006 4:11:41 PM
what do you care? you dont vote.
11/7/2006 4:12:28 PM
noi had it out but she didn't seem interested in ityou have to give them your name and address. but one could easily come up with a list of homeowners and have people vote for those people just by giving names and addresses.
11/7/2006 4:12:31 PM
uh, you cant possibly vote more than once. they have one sticker for your name and address at your assigned polling place.
^uh, i guess you didnt watch or read any news in the subsequent weeks following elections over the past decade
11/7/2006 4:19:04 PM
classic treetwista retort. GG DUDE
11/7/2006 4:23:00 PM
nope
11/7/2006 4:23:22 PM
^^welli think the topic of the thread is worth discussing overallyou forgot to add a comment about "classic sober46an3 being a smartass to treetwista" though[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:24 PM. Reason : ^^]
11/7/2006 4:23:56 PM
well, this thread is about voting. and you dont voteso, asking the question, "why does it matter to you?" even if it comes across as trolling or being a smart ass, is relevant, no?[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:27 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 4:26:25 PM
soyou're not fighting in Iraq...I guess that means you can't talk about itand no its not relevant...its just a personal smartass attack...he didnt even say whether or not he was carded..but so what, back to the topic at handsounds so far like most people (who responded in the thread) have said they werent carded...i think its fucked up...if i chose to vote i would expect it to be counted fairly[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:30 PM. 11/7/2006 4:27:17 PM
oh look a logical fallacybut, whatever, i didnt ask the question and i really dont care about the answer. continue...

11/7/2006 4:32:50 PM
the polling places aren't supposed to ask for photo id in ncit's not required.
11/7/2006 4:35:11 PM
^Do you think it should be required?
11/7/2006 4:35:25 PM
TO GET THIS THREAD BACK ON TOPIC (who knew with tree posting it would deviate to some bullshit)not having to show ID doesn't really bother me. maybe if there was some kind of evidence of people in NC voting for other people or voting as dead people or whatever, i would reevaluate my opinion on the matter.i just dont see someone really taking the time to go through all the trouble to look up your voter registration information, find out your designated polling place, memorize your address and then actually go out and vote for you[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 4:37 PM. 11/7/2006 4:35:26 PM
Nope wasnt asked for ID. My neighbor actually was my poll worker And we do not need ID for voting, as there has not been a rash of voter fraud....hmm..ever. Could there be one day? Sure, but a back door poll tax is not the way to go.And sort of on topic, does anyone here think we need a more streamlined national voting system? I have some ideas, but does anyone think this method of 50 different types of voting is better than one?
11/7/2006 4:44:32 PM
Was asked for my Voter Registration card and was forced to sign it in order to vote (I had forgotten)This is for South Carolina (where the Governor wasn't allowed to vote because he forgot his registration card, dumbass)
11/7/2006 5:08:31 PM
i don't really see requiring ID as a "backdoor poll tax" given its requirement for just about everything else in life. and voter id cards certainly are free, and don't require a state-issued ID to obtainbut in general I agree with the sentiment -- the level of voter fraud isn't sufficient to significantly impact many (if any) races. this amounts to a disincentive to actually commit fraud, particularly when weighed against the consequences for being caught. balance that against the incentive for normal voters not to vote at all as they stand in line, have their identification verified, etc etc etc -- and in the end I think it turns out for the betterbut, as for the topic in general -- in North Carolina, Board of Elections workers are banned from asking for any additional identification beyond what is allowed under state law. Which, right now, amounts to "state your name and address please"
11/7/2006 5:13:40 PM
I'm in Missouri, but they asked me to show either my voter registration card, a signed ID, or anything with my current address.
11/7/2006 6:07:39 PM
no
11/7/2006 6:21:55 PM
they asked for mine and my mom's but not my dad. maybe cuz we're brown, but then again the lady was brown too?!
11/7/2006 7:16:35 PM
I had my voting card, so I wasnt asked for my ID. But I saw someone without a voting card handing them a DL.[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 7:19 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 7:19:08 PM
they asked for my name and addressthat's it
11/7/2006 7:21:53 PM
no...wow, i didn't even think about itthey did ask me my address though[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 7:26 PM. Reason : ...]
11/7/2006 7:26:01 PM
yes
11/7/2006 7:31:38 PM
I was not asked for ID, and I dont think the state requires it. If you vote provisional, you have to have an ID
11/7/2006 7:54:52 PM
of course I live in VA and it is required that they ask
11/7/2006 8:50:35 PM
^i assume you voted for Allen
11/7/2006 9:00:41 PM
I show my ID for the following reasons: (1) because voters should have to show ID, and (2) because I refuse to say my address out loud. Where I live is NOT the business of all the non-poll workers milling about.
11/7/2006 9:07:06 PM
it's freely available online. (your address).[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 9:15 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 9:14:55 PM
No, I was not asked for ID.
11/7/2006 9:25:21 PM
11/7/2006 9:39:41 PM
nope - was not asked for.Went with the wife and neither of us were asked.
11/7/2006 9:45:50 PM
no, but I live in Kansas
11/7/2006 11:00:21 PM
no, but i wouldn't have minded since i had to go to a different polling station than i was registered at (forgot to update my registration after i moved, went to my old polling station, they sent me to my new one... i wouldn't have minded if the new one had wanted me to show some ID even though there was no legal reason for them to)
11/7/2006 11:02:21 PM
11/7/2006 11:03:22 PM
it took no special information to look up my address (well, the one i was registered under) at wakegov.com... just my name and date of birth...[Edited on November 7, 2006 at 11:22 PM. Reason : .]
11/7/2006 11:22:45 PM
^x8 No shit, sarijoul. Do you think you're giving me some new information? I said, "Where I live is NOT the business of all the non-poll workers milling about." If they don't hear my name, they won't know how to look me up, will they? By the way, the address listed for me online is not where I live, smart guy. Stop fucking trolling me, man.
11/8/2006 3:34:05 AM
I was not. I found that rather disturbing.
11/8/2006 3:35:19 AM
didn't you read the sign? the law requires that you state your name, address, and party. there is no requirement by law to show an id. why would you then be disturbed that you weren't asked to show one?
