I am 23, and looking to meet new people. i only know like one person in town. what are some good places to meet cool people? good singles places?

this is the proper place to post this

It depends on what you are into or what kind of people you want to be surrounded by

for example
Places like EV and cantina, and the like around campus are more college kids

and places like glenwood are more young professional

and places in downtown are kind of a mix of lots of different things

Mets or Yankees? If you pick the right one people will help you. If not you're out of luck.

** wasn't Harris Teeter in CV the #1 singles spot on Citysearch a few years back btw?

The answer is Yankees.

People around here associate with winners.

First Friday downtown, go to all the art galleries and drink wine/beer and mingle. Probably the best year-round civic event to meet intelligent, creative, non-retard people. It's the first friday of every month.

Take a continuing education course at state at grad level and you will meet some kids that way.

If you play sports, join a soccer/volleyball/tennis/golf league, there are adult leagues for pretty much anything you can think of around here (even Curling!). There are also pretty good running/biking group outings through All Star Bikes and Inside Out Sports, if that's more your thing.

As for bars, YMMV, it seems like most of the bar scene around here is either a meat market or pretty cliquey.

For music, pretty much anywhere around here is a good spot to find like minded people for whatever you enjoy. Or you can always venture over to Cat's cradle and the like in Chapel Hill

Everyone will have an opinion about it, but when I lived in NC (after I graduated) I liked the more non-college bars. I wasn't trying to hook up and just liked chill spots to drink with friends and I always liked going out in Cary more than Raleigh. Places like Hibernian or Fox & Hound.. or a sports bar like Woody's or Upper Deck.

I have no idea where you're planning on living (downtown, near State, out in suburbs in Cary, etc, etc)...

** didnt have to deal with Johnny-beer-muscles, kids trying to puke, and morons counting their shots..

ive been to several of these and all i ever seem to meet are dudes i would like to punch in the face and girls that think i should be praising them because they're wearing a fuckin a backpack

Plus the art is overpriced because the galleries charge the artist like 40%. The beers a 8 bucks and stale. Usually the only ones i go to are ones where the artist is a friend or a friend of a friend of mine.

Just my PoV

^^^I pretty much agree, problem is it seems most of the people who frequent the more chill spots are the married/taken crowd, or groups of friends just going out to have a chill time with their own peoples.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

^^ I don't know where you are going, because the galleries I go to all have free wine/beer and food, the people are all laid back as hell and the art is extremely reasonably priced (if you are talking about ArtSpace, that place is a joke, don't even bother walking in there unless they have a special exhibition)

well where do you go then?

the places i usually end up are ritzy uptight, haughty taughty places on glenwood or somewhere in that category. I've been to a few that were good, but not many.

Yea you are on the wrong side of downtown.

Lump, DesignBox, Bickett Gallery, Father & Son's, Fish Market, occasionally Artspace, and a few others around Moore Square are the good spots with real people. Occasionally Slim's will have people's work up, and there's a few other galleries around there I can never remember the names of.

You are officially the first person I have ever heard that would even go back to Ess, much less go there intentionally a second time.

I've never seen more fights, dumb ass meatheads and stupidity than in that bar, and there's quite a bit of that in other places around here
