that and the fact that my alternator has finally been worn out. I figure that at 500 watts rms (800 peak), a 1 farad will be enough. I have a friend that has a slightly smaller setup, so a 1/2 farard is all he needs. Anyone have anything? $130 for a new 1.2 farad is a bit high. Then again, that's also what I just paid for a new alt

if your alternator is worn out and/or is going bad then gettin a capcaitor will just make things worse. your better off usin that money to 1) buy a larger alternator 2) buy a larger battery 3) upgrading your big 3 wires or some combination of those 3.

What voltage you looking for?
11/6/2006 11:26:20 PM
This would be in a car, so it would see up to 14.4 volts, but realistically it would see about 12.8-14v. Most car caps are rated to 20v.Don't get a cap. You don't need it for your setup, and if you already have problems you are going to make it worse.

^^^^u do not need a cap by any means- save the money and buy a new alternator-

from what I have read he has already bought a new alternator....depending on the car a cap may help... if you have an SUV more than likely a new alternator along with a good battery and a 1 farad cap should do well....if you have something like a honda accord I would look downgrading your system or upgrading to a bigger altenator from the one you just bought....Usually systems carrying 500watts rms do not have a great affect on your car(this is not a lot of power) seems maybe not only your altenator was bad but your battery may need to be tested also...Now when you get into try to push power like MaximaDrvr then you should start to run into altenator problems

Sorry, you guys misunderstood me. I have a new alternator. I don't want to go about ruining the next one. not that I've done much research, but I don't think I can get a bigger alternator for the 944. Bigger battery? I've got a pretty big one. I figured a capacitor would help prevent my next alternator from burning up and dying. Yeah, I could use bigger wires... (using 8 guage at the moment). Still... any suggestions?

Is a 115 Amp Alternator not small?
11/7/2006 8:33:10 PM
That is a decent sized alternator. You definately don't need to get something bigger for what you have. Try upgrading your power wire and possibly the big three.A cap is a bandaid for bigger problems. Also, alternators do go bad. You ever think that the two are unrelated?

i have a 137amp alternator and i'm running 1000watts to my sub and 600watts to my mids and highs all rms . i've done my big three and i'm running a decent sized walmart battery. i've never killed my alternator and the oly time u see my lights dim is at close to full tilt while i'm idling. so yea skip the cap and do your big three and upgrade the battery if possible.

I am running a 120A alt to my JL 1000/1 -subJL 300/2- frontsJL 250/1- subNo problems yet.

agreed, upgrade the wire first, it will be the cheapest, that alt. is definitely big enough, im running 450watts off my 110amp alt and its fine, how many cca's and ca's is your battery putting out, if you think your alt is not performing right take your car to advance auto and have them test your alt, while they are testing it turn on your system about 2/3 or what you usually listen at. if its fine upgrade to a 4 gauge wire.

mk. sounds good.. thanks for the responses guys.

http://www.cardiscountstereos.com/WireGuide.aspAt peak power you will also be running about 60 amps with the battery putting out 14 volts supporting 800 watts. 4 gauge should be fine, but from my understanding this should not cause your alternator to go bad. If anything it should cause your amp to not perform properly(cut out or blow fuses).

Stop buying your alternators @ Auto Zone

^^ I can see how upgrading the cables will help deliver the power to the amp and all. I don't really understand how it will prevent my alt from going bad. Anyways, I don't recall the alternator ever being replaced (not in any of the records), so it could have just gone bad with age. With that said, I guess I'll just keep my current setup, and consider upgrading cables when I have money laying around saying "spend me".^actually, i bought it from 944online.... nt gg
