The idea is to revisit the location of old photographs and take identical photographs, as if the camera never moved and the world changed around it. It's a little more difficult than I expected due to variations in lenses, inaccessibility of locations and a lack of constant markers.http://ace.methodcomputers.com/ghost/

Nice job. What's that tall thing on Tompkins Hall (#5)?
11/2/2006 5:29:53 PM
Tompkins had a tower before it burned in the 1920's(?) The kept the brick shell when they rebuilt the building, but the tower got chopped. Here's a photochop by ArcBoyeee:--------------------------------------Nevermind, it was for a water tower, burned in 1914...

11/2/2006 5:42:31 PM
i always had the idea that if you could find any old photos/footage of campus you could actually project it onto the live spacehow weird would it to be to have it life size and kinda in 3d
11/2/2006 6:18:25 PM
dude, that is fucking awesome! you should put it into a book or something.
11/2/2006 6:21:15 PM

11/2/2006 6:46:22 PM
^^ maybe because trees on farmland isn't a good thing???
11/2/2006 6:55:41 PM
very cool
11/2/2006 7:02:52 PM
Nice work!
11/2/2006 7:30:47 PM
This makes me sad, though. Not sure why
11/2/2006 7:48:35 PM
Probably because most of the people in the photos are deader than Jimmy Hoffa.
11/2/2006 7:51:42 PM
Probably because you also realize that one day everything you see, know and love will disappear just like it did for these people. Who cares if a few buildings are still standing in a few decades? Every past moment of your life will already be long gone. So, umm, enjoy it. Or buckle down and make it count. Or drink more. I'm not really sure where I was going with this. Ooooh! 'The Office' is on TV!
11/2/2006 9:02:29 PM
nice picture work. I'm sure you're aware, but the website could use a lot of work. If the images were worked into a nice looking site it'd be quite a tool.
11/2/2006 9:03:10 PM
where do you get your pictures from?have you tried to see if you could get any funding from the university to make this an official thing?
11/2/2006 9:12:56 PM
coolthe tree grew
11/2/2006 9:23:11 PM
that's amazing, great job. how do you determine the angle/perspective for the modern shots? take the old photo's out with you and line it up or something?
11/2/2006 11:09:31 PM
this is badass. give us more.
11/2/2006 11:16:01 PM

11/2/2006 11:33:54 PM

i think
11/3/2006 12:21:15 AM
11/3/2006 12:28:47 AM
Here's my guess as to why there are no trees in the old photos:The old photos are probably from around the time the buildings had just been built, in which case the land was probably cleared for the construction, and over time the trees have been planted and grown back. My guess is they didn't have the techniques to keep the trees or else didn't think about trying to keep them, so they got rid of all of them at the time. That, or NC State was first built in the middle of a field.

11/3/2006 3:28:12 AM
I dig this thread.
11/3/2006 9:28:42 AM
^^Yea man..I'm currently getting my images from http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/specialcollections/eresources/digitalimages.html (Search the database...) but I wouldn't mind seeing what you have as well.I've shot more of these, but they don't line up well enough yet. I'll have to take some more when I can.I'd like to do more of these around Raleigh, but I don't have as many hi-res originals and my knowledge of the area is limited.
11/3/2006 10:08:20 AM
I havent been on campus in 3 years.. what the heck did they do in front of turlington and alexander?
11/3/2006 10:14:46 AM
That's great! It reminds me of those "New York through the ages" pics that Big Man postedI also think it would be cool to see the pics side by side instead of superimposed . . . that's what the NY ones were like
11/3/2006 10:17:59 AM
11/3/2006 11:57:01 AM
I like. Don't forget that Clark Hall used to be an infirmary--they say it's haunted.
11/3/2006 12:24:38 PM

11/3/2006 12:28:18 PM

11/3/2006 9:44:11 PM
pretty sure this guy should be banned from TWW for being the first person to actually contribute something truly spectacular, novel, and worthwhile
11/3/2006 10:00:30 PM
they have something similar at http://www.ncsu.edu/nso/traditions/campus.htmexcept is it not very well matched up in some instances, and uses html rollower instead of overlaying the two pics
11/3/2006 11:18:28 PM
http://www.ncsu.edu/nso/traditions/campus/hillsborough%20st/hillsborough.htmthis will link you to the original original tompkins, prior to the first fire

11/4/2006 2:03:48 AM
http://www.ncsu.edu/nso/traditions/campus.htmThat's awesome, though it could be better. I'd actually been looking for some of those photographs.
