For the second time in a week, a club sport team won a championship, as the rugby team defeated in-state opponents Appalachian State, North Carolina and East Carolina in route to a state title this weekend.

The weekend tournament was not held in North Carolina, however -- instead, it was in Danville, Va.

"It felt really good to beat those two teams [UNC and ECU] -- especially UNC," Jake Daniel, a senior in business management, said. "They're a powerhouse in North Carolina. The past couple of years, they've always been on top."

But N.C. State, after finishing in second place the last two years, won the state tournament this season.

In the opening game, State first defeated Appalachian State 14-0 on Saturday. A.J. Harris, a senior in technology education, scored all of the Pack's points in the match -- both tries and kicking.

"It was A.J.-14, Appalachian-0," Harris said with a laugh.

The Wolfpack's second match Saturday was against the rival Tar Heels. Daniel, the club's president, said rugby at Carolina is much bigger than it is at State, demonstrated by $40,000 worth of support the Heels receive compared to the $1,500 the Pack gets from Campus Recreation. According to Daniel, the Pack is a Division-II team, while Carolina has Division-I status.

Senior Matt Garcia, an animal science major, said Carolina's players were looking for a fight before the game even started.

"They kept saying 'This is our territory' before the game even started," he said.

"This is really big for our name. Whenever people in North Carolina think rugby, they think UNC, but we made them just look bad."

Carolina led at halftime, 12-0, but Daniel said the team's coach, Jeremy Goodwin, "got his team mad."

Early in the second half, with the team down 12-7, State decided it had to get physical in order to shift momentum its way.

Russell Reagan, a junior in horticulture, said that's when his teammate, George Bouwer, a senior in business management, decided to take the game into his own hands.

"They were taking some cheap shots and then George notched it up a level and took a cheap shot at them. He actually stomped on a scrum half," Reagan said. "That really got both teams really worked up."

State then went on to score the next 19 points -- putting away Carolina, 26-12.

"We destroyed them," Harris said.

Garcia attributed the win to State's forwards. "

""We had the huge advantage in our forwards," he said. "They're the best I've seen. We all needed to step up and give them an opportunity."

The team followed the win against Carolina with a 15-13 victory against East Carolina.

Christopher Jones, a senior in technology education, said the championship was great for the team, especially since the sport is growing so much at the school.

"We have more and more people that want to play every year," Jones said. "This is awesome because this sport is growing in popularity."

But even though the team is pleased with the win, the team maintained it's not about the glory in rugby.

Bouwer said in order to play the sport, "you have to love it" because it's not like football games where "there are packed stadiums to watch the match."

Daniel said he enjoys his junior-varsity, club-sport status at State. He said his team doesn't play for anything other than the love for the game.

"We all do this for the love of the game," he said. "The first time I ever touched a rugby ball was when I joined this club. That's why I love being a club sport -- it's all about people who love the game."

Garcia, however, said he often wished his team would get more attention at a University where the varsity sports garner most of the interest.

"We're giving this University something it can be proud of," Garcia said. "We're giving it a winner. I know, in due time, fans are going to appreciate us more."

My freshman and sophomore year, we got our asses kicked by UNC in the rugby state championship.

In my junior and senior year, we fucked them up and beat them back to back in the finals.
