Talk about a shit thread. We frown on dropping a link with a single line of trite commentary around here. You actually have anything to say about this, or should be expedite this thread to Chit Chat?
10/31/2006 1:48:37 PM
^agree.Come on now, you have to discuss the link instead of just dropping it.Methinks: This will get overblown in some circles and underblown (much like the captain of the chess team) in others. I wish we could release this information as if Cheney said it and see people's reactions first. That'd be a fun experiment.[Edited on October 31, 2006 at 1:51 PM. Reason : I went ahead and made the joke for you.]
10/31/2006 1:50:57 PM
talk about soap box suicide
10/31/2006 1:55:27 PM
that doesn't necessarily mean what you are implying, what is this from so we can hear the context?
10/31/2006 1:55:50 PM
he is pretty much implying that only dumbasses serve in the military
10/31/2006 1:57:00 PM
10/31/2006 1:57:14 PM
http://tinyurl.com/yadw2mlook how easy that was to improve your thread[Edited on October 31, 2006 at 2:00 PM. Reason : .]

It was the lead story on rush limbaugh's show today. Of course there is no context. He told all his listeners to go listen to the 10 second clip so they did and then they rushed to their message board of choice and posted it.
10/31/2006 2:02:08 PM
im trying to find the john stewart clip where he tells kerry to just give up and go away
10/31/2006 2:02:41 PM
Why can't they take a lesson from Mondale or Bob Dole and just dissapear or turn into comedians after losing?
10/31/2006 2:18:14 PM
kerry is a moron.
10/31/2006 2:18:33 PM
^
10/31/2006 2:21:03 PM
^^
10/31/2006 2:21:27 PM
i love my jewish family members to death, but they're huge kerry homers (they live in mass.). i tried to explain why he was unelectable but they're convinced he'd be a better guy without the media constantly making him look bad. sigh.
10/31/2006 2:24:37 PM
I'm a big fan of context too, but I'm not really sure I can conceive of a believable context in which that sentence doesn't imply that those in the military are the ones who don't do well in school or who aren't smart.Maybe if he prefaced that statement with "I totally don't believe..."
10/31/2006 2:28:52 PM
and now the pundits will talk about this non-stop for the next 2 weeks...
10/31/2006 2:32:31 PM
^^ my point about context was not intended to let kerry off the hook for his remarks. He is a dumbass. It was more about the knee jerk reaction to whatever Rush is blathering about at any given moment.
10/31/2006 2:42:55 PM
True, indeed.
10/31/2006 2:43:33 PM
The way that Republicans focus on one line from this speech validates the other 99% of it.There were no truer words spoken than what I just heard him say on TV. Granted, its very strange coming from him since all he did during election time was tell the people what he thought they wanted to hear.
10/31/2006 2:53:24 PM
I know someone who served in Iraq 1 that basically told me the same thing a few years back in HS. He said something like "some of you guys are so smart, don't be a dumbass like me and join the military, I didn't know what I was doing." Kerry is an idiot for believing that, but it's not that uncommon of a sentiment.
10/31/2006 3:00:23 PM
my family always told me "if you join, be smart enough to go to the academy. dont be a dumbass and enlist." i wonder which branch is smartest on the average?[Edited on October 31, 2006 at 3:13 PM. Reason : .]
10/31/2006 3:13:08 PM
Most of the people in ROTC in HS weren't exactly the brightest either. And someone else I know was strongly encouraged to join to escape some legal hardships. There's only a few people I know who were very intelligent, that joined for reasons not having to do with not being able to do anything else.
10/31/2006 3:18:14 PM
regardless of how things are, we need to to promote the idea that service is honorable for people from all walks of life. it used to be common for men to serve voluntarily after college, and thats something that i think we could use a little more of.

10/31/2006 3:41:11 PM
this is republicans grasping for air before the Democrats win and put them in front of committees and hearings and punish them for creating most corrupt congress in the history of our country[Edited on October 31, 2006 at 3:44 PM. Reason : .]
10/31/2006 3:43:50 PM
10/31/2006 3:49:00 PM
pretty sure Kerry denigrated the military I would hope that there's a bit more substance to our military than if it could be degraded just because a northeastern liberal said some mean things about it.
10/31/2006 3:52:18 PM
im on the left side of things, but that statement sounds horrible. i dont care how he meant it, it came out horribly and he needs to apoligize.strong retort tho:
10/31/2006 3:53:52 PM
Lambert Field
10/31/2006 4:01:01 PM
Kerry had this to say: "I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed-suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq." And supposedly, his statement was suppose to be a knock at Bush, meaning that if you're an idiot and stuff, you'll get the country stuck in Iraq (like Bush did), not that you'd be a soldier personally stuck in Iraq.
10/31/2006 4:10:06 PM
bush degrades the american people once again
10/31/2006 4:16:32 PM
Well, no offense to his spin campaign, but there's no fucking way in hell he meant that as a shot at Bush and "you'll get the country stuck in Iraq"Not to mention the irony of the fact that Bush graduated with 1 point higher grade average (not GPA, grade average) than Kerry from Yale.
10/31/2006 4:20:01 PM
well its hard to tell without the entire speech
10/31/2006 4:25:47 PM
i'd like to see the entire speech, not just the 10 seconds.it looks bad, definitely. but lets be honest, the valedictorians of our high schools didnt enlist in the army. i have 3 cousins that joined the army right after high school because they just didnt take it seriously, and upon graduating they really had no options. now they are in iraq. (and one in S. korea)i have no idea why he said it, and it sounds pretty offensive. whether it was a botched joke, or whatever, he fucked up! because this shit is going to get spun 23942 different ways for the next week[Edited on October 31, 2006 at 4:37 PM. Reason : .]
10/31/2006 4:32:55 PM
Indeed it is, and I am waiting for details about the entire speech.
10/31/2006 4:33:16 PM
this is a prime example of the similarities between democrats and republicans. whenever a republican says something controversial the democrats eat them alive. now it's happening to the democrats. this is nothing more than a simple comment taken out of contents. any fucking one of you that has common sense would realize that a VETERAN is NOT calling our soldiers idiots. he is simply saying that if you don't get an education, then very few jobs will be available to you, and with the huge need for soldiers, ODDS are you'll end up in the military in iraq
10/31/2006 4:35:22 PM
you are a little naive
10/31/2006 4:37:54 PM
10/31/2006 4:44:16 PM
10/31/2006 4:45:15 PM
10/31/2006 4:50:20 PM
so Kerry wasn't a spoiled rich kid?
10/31/2006 5:00:31 PM
look...i dont care what kerry says...it doesnt really matter...but he says stupid stupid things....things that you should not say if you are trying to be president....not real bright
10/31/2006 5:01:15 PM
^i will agree somewhat with the 2nd thing you said
10/31/2006 5:02:52 PM
ok...yeah...i mean...even if what he says is true...he is just not real smart about what he says and how he says it..not only that...he reacts to the criticism of such statements the wrong way...i mean...i would probably react the same way he does...but someone who wants to be president should do that...not if he ever wants to be elected
10/31/2006 5:04:24 PM
10/31/2006 5:06:25 PM
10/31/2006 5:10:11 PM
10/31/2006 5:13:04 PM
While Kerry is obviously an idiot, and I in no way support him, this statement was obviously towards Bush and being "stuck in (a war in) Iraq."
10/31/2006 5:34:34 PM
i believe it started when we began fighting wars which did very little to actually protect our country and instead began fighting wars in the pursuit of the illusion of safety. I believe our soldiers deserve the very best and fighting in wars which create this mask of safety for the citizens of the US while putting them through shit in a stange country is not for the best.
