My AVG anti-virus freeware just informed me that it is no longer free. I don't want to pay for virus software, so if anyone knows any decent free ones (like AVG, in my opinion was) let me know. Barring that, what is the most user-friendly virus software that is pretty decently priced.

I don't want anti-virus that I have to fight with constantly to let me run my computer the way I want. Just basically need a scan and updated virus database weekly or so.

Thanks for any help you got.

stay away from Norton AV (Symantec's home edition)

Symantec corp AV is pretty hot though. OneCare live is pretty good.

hey the new version of AVG still has a free version.

Here's the link to it:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_428a818.exe

What you get:
Quote :
"Easy to use
Regular and automatic virus database updates
Realtime protection of files and e-mails
Scheduled and manual testing
Windows and Linux
And most of all ... great customer satisfaction!"

What you don't get:
Quote :
"Anti-Spyware
Anti-Spam
Firewall
24/7 Technical Support
Priority updates
Multiple languages
Detailed settings
Consent for commercial use"

Haha, oooh didn't see your age. Guess they were still using norton back in the day right?

Symantec brands their coperate or enterprise level antivirus software under the "Symantec" name and the home stuff under the "Norton" name. The current software used by NCSU for windows machines is Symantec Antivirus 9.

There's your list of freeware ... only one I recognize offhand is AVG. Most other software looks like it will run you $30-$50 per year.

ActiveVirusShield - powered by Kaspersky, branded by AOL, but free and rave reviews from people who use it... http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

or I'd recommend Avast!, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html although it's a bit slower for realtime scanning than others, it's a very comprehensive AV

Oh right I should have guessed you were being a dick because someone said the operational year instead of version number.
