Has anybody heard of or actually used a pocket pc phone as a wireless router?I've got an Audiovox PPC6700 which has everything I need to make it to a wireless router but has anybody done it?

normally I'm all about being cheap, but this is below my cheapness even. they're like $15, go buy one

do you mean as a modem? ive done that

I am not being cheap, but rather would like to use it while traveling.I use the wireless modem function normally, however it is hell to get it to work with my MacBook, then I've got to share the connection with whoever else is traveling with me.Basically I would like me PPC to connect to the EV-DO network and share the connection through its built in wireless. It doesn't sound like it would be anything hard to do, but then again, it could be impossible.

it would probably be easier to share the connection through your computer, but i havent tried to use a smartphone to do it

you really need this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124181but it costs money.

Okay, I'm not typing this on my phone this time so I can actually write.Sharing the connection through the PC is a MAJOR pain in the ass. The Modem connection is EXTREMELY hard to get working with my Mac (appears only works on bluetooth, and that's dodgy at best), and I've not tackled sharing an internet connection yet with it (used to have a PC).gs7 the problem with buying a router is I'm typically in locations WITHOUT an internet connection, however I will have cell phone coverage. So it would be nice to be able to load a program that would allow my phone to become a wireless access point, basically would just plug it into the wall outlet and let it go.Happens a lot while traveling and just humming along with friends, when you pile into a suburban it would be cool to have our own mobile internet connection without all the hassle that it currently requires.Right now the process is to load WinModem on the PPC, dial in on a bluetooth modem connection, then share that connection with the other two laptops. There's got to be a way to have the PPC dial into the connection (#777), turn on the 802.11 connection, assign IP addresses to the clients, and share the connection. If I remember right the PPC has a 400MHz processor, and even with the background functions of getting text messages and voicemail notifications, it should have the processing power and ram to do this.

get rid of the mac, cause its a breeze to use with windows
10/29/2006 5:45:07 PM
Its still a pain to have to set it all up, I'm looking for an easy all in one software solution for my PPC.It wasn't fool proof on the PC either.
10/29/2006 5:53:19 PM
it took me all of 5 minutes to setup a connection, then to reuse it i just have to change the connection really quick. im thinking you are making it more difficult, have you googled instructions for how to set it up?

Okay, play that game with a Mac.Its not that easy, and I'm not going to go through the hassle of installing the drivers and configuring the software on somebody else's machine. So if you know an easy way to do it with a Mac, let me know, but I'd really like to keep is self contained on my phone.

one thing i noticed, when i had my SSID hid (not broadcast) on my wireless network I couldn't hook up a Macbook to the network unless broadcast the SSID. even after the initital connection is made (and after putting in the WEP), if I stop broadcasting the SSID the macbook can't get online. is this normal?

Okay so now getting my Mac to use my PPC as a modem has become impossible (bluetooth has gone insane).... anybody know if there are USB drivers for the modem portion?I use MissingSync as well, so it tends to make things a bit crazy.
