Have I missed something, or am I underestimating the added value of something?

I'm looking for a used car. Emailed a dude on craigslist about a 92 paseo. He's asking $600 over the highest value I could configure for the car (155K, AC, new tires and belts [he says. easy enough to check])

on KBB, the car priced at 1595. on edmunds, $909.
He seems to expect to sell this car at $2000.

I told him "thanks, but no thanks. Get back to me when you're willing to move on that price" already, but now I'm paranoid that I'm being too much of a jew.

sometimes the market price for a car is in fact higher than what is listed on kbb or edmunds - the paseo is not one of those cars though...

if you feel like the price is too high, then don't buy it and forget about it. that car is probably worth that much to him and possibly somebody else. but you can't get upset at him for his asking price or think he's smoking crack because you don't agree with it. maybe the price is the going rate. hell, my truck's book value is $2200 but i could easily get 4-5K for it.

If it's worth $909 go find one for that price. You won't be able to. And if you do it will be such a piece of shit you'd drop another $500+ making it roadworthy. Bluebook values are generally a joke. Look on Autotrader, Cars.com, etc. and figure out what they're really going for in this area.

It sucks when you try to sell a car and people make ridiculously cheap offers because that's what KBB says. If I'm advertising for $2000 don't even waste my time with a testdrive if you are going to offer me $900. No, I don't want to see the kbb.com price that you printed on your computer at home.

If you know the price is significantly more than you're willing to pay don't even e-mail the guy.

Some of these guys have some valid points. Sure, some cars in good condition in some local markets will bring more than KBB appraises them at.

However, they are more than generous for others.

And in this case, I believe the Paseo falls solidly in this category. It's a godamn Tercel with a sporty body.

Would you pay 2 grand for a Tercel in good condition? I might, but it's (a) not likely that I would want to spend so much for a Turdcel or Paseo, and (b) if I was gonna drop that much green, it would be for something better.

BTW, the 240SX has a cult following that has inflated its value. Its real value is nothing near what folks are paying for it.

And trucks always sell for more money because, well...they're TRUCKS.

And Kyle, if you can't get a set of tires for a Paseo for under 300 dolla, then you're on crack or spending way too much. And we all know that new tires don't do shit for the price of a used car...at least it's negligible.

great comment sumfoo - the market price of a supra compared to it's kbb value definitely will be very useful for wondering if the market value of a paseo is near kbb

in the spirit of sumfoo's brilliance and i guess nightkid has to be lumped in there - try listing cars that are as far away from the difference paseo in kbb listing price and market value as possible - BONUS POINTS if you own the car or know someone that owns it - lame....

Hell, look at propert value writeups for cars. The KBB for my car is 1k more than i paid NEW, the city of raleigh value is 2 GRAND more than it was worth new, WITH 54k on it.
