i have changed mine once in 60,000 miles, 99 cobra. with that being said i think most people try to do it at least every 20 and the real hard core people do it every 10,000.I do it when i change spark plugs which is every 20-30 thousand miles

20-30k should be adequate

any chance at all a fuel filter change be a solution to the below problem....?--------Im having an issue with my car. It occasionally has trouble starting. When I turn the key the RPMs go up, groans and shakes a little as it struggles to stabalize and then konks out. I have to repeat this several times to get my car started when it occurs - each time having to give it gas to get up. But once it stabalizes, it has no problem at all holding an 800 rpm reading with zero rpms movement. The rpms dont jump around while the car is running or moving. This happens about 5% of the time, totally random, and no check engine light. It's getting unpredictable to start, as well as frustrating. Any suggestions on what this might be?

could be.. how long since you've changed it?
10/17/2006 9:36:44 AM
at least 30k......thats how long ive owned the car, and I don't believe I have changed it.Back in december I had a full fuel system cleaning flush, do they change it then?
10/17/2006 11:21:53 AM
They probably just poured in a bottle of fuel system cleaner from Autozone and charged you $40.

fuel filter is very cheap and very easy to replace. lots located directly above your rear axle in the middle of the car. just keep your mouth closed when under the car taking it out.

about 5 posts up.....that happened again tonight.....frustrating, as well as worse and more presistant, did it the whole way going home....the car either acts totally fine or like that situation above.how do I know if my fuel pressure is low? any other suggestions, still no check engine light

turns out, some stupid valve on my IAC was shut. No idea how it shut, why it shut, or why it can even shut....but it was the air valve that helped the car start......anyways back up to normal (and running way better than before) thanks everyone for the suggestions.

if its been 30k+, you should still replace the filter...
