I think I was drunk when I did that. I seriously don't remember doing it but it was in the AM Anyway, rumor is that the Mets are going to go hard after Soriano, not after Zito, and the Glavine option will be picked up.
10/27/2006 2:38:14 PM
Yanks will sign Zito, trade Sheffield to the Angels for a relief pitcher. thats probably about it.
10/27/2006 2:39:41 PM
Oh good. Cuz the Angels don't give us enough trouble already, we want them to have the two hardest, fastest swingers in the game.

10/27/2006 4:11:15 PM
The Padres GM Towers was quoted as saying he is very confident Alfonso Soriano will sign in SD. This pretty much dispels any Peavy trade rumors and also makes more sense of the Barfield for Kouzmanoff deal. The Mets are working on acquiring the pieces for a Dontrelle Willis trade. They have the pitching prospects but are working on possibly acquiring one more outfield prospect to attempt it..

11/9/2006 5:23:16 PM
Due to them hiring Washington, Zito is now interested in the Rangers as well as Yankees, Red Sox, etc...
11/9/2006 5:44:24 PM
Reports say the Red Sox bid $42 million for the rights to Japanese Ace Daisuke Matsuzaka if this is true its a great day for the Sox. Even if he doesn't sign we will keep him away from the Yankee's for another year. Scott Boras will make us pay out the ass for him regardless since he is in Steinbrenners pocket.
11/13/2006 2:52:52 PM
I would say that if you don't pay for him this year than you are an idiot. There are so few good free agent pitching prospects this year that to not give him what he wants, even if it's astronomical, is to claim that you believe you have the pitching to take you to the WS this year, and that is most definitely NOT the case for the BoSox.
11/13/2006 4:04:24 PM
[quote]Boston places highest Matsuzaka bidRed Sox have 30 days to negotiate contract with aceBy Jon Heyman, SI.comNAPLES, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox have won negotiating rights for Japanese League star Daisuke Matsuzaka, SI.com has confirmed. The Seibu Lions have until Tuesday to decide whether to accept the bid, and it is expected they will announce they are accepting it on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET in a joint press conference with the Major League Baseball office. After the announcement, the Red Sox will have 30 days to negotiate a contract with Matsuzaka, a star right-handed pitcher. It is likely they'll be able to come to an agreement, but if they can't, the Red Sox will hold onto their bid money and Matsuzaka would return to Japan for at least another year.At least eight teams and possibly several more are thought to have bid on Matsuzaka. The Mets, Angels, Yankees, Rangers, Cubs, Diamondbacks and Indians are all believed to have made a bid.ESPN's Peter Gammons reported earlier on Monday that the Red Sox had the high bid. Previous reports have pegged the winning bid at $38-to-45 million and $42 million, but a source has indicated that the winning bid may be even higher than that.[quote]http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/baseball/mlb/11/13/boston.bidding/index.html

Mets have re-signed Valentin for THREE MILLION. Chicago cubs have re-signed Aramis to 5/$73 million. Two ridiculous moves.

11/14/2006 10:07:54 AM
what's ridiculous about Valentin and Aramis?
11/14/2006 10:23:19 AM
^ both Valentin and Ramirez got more than they really deserved.
11/14/2006 12:22:01 PM
$3M is like pocket change with the revenue stream the Mets now have. I have no problem with that. They also signed El Duque for 2 years @ $3M each. A bargain if you ask me and he stays healthy...** Also, Ramirez deal actually helps set the market lower than it otherwise would be. That isn't a huge deal for someone his age with his production at all. Seems like some peopel might be stuck in 1998 still...[Edited on November 14, 2006 at 12:25 PM. Reason : x]

Ramirez stats over the last 3 years:.318 avg / 36 HR / 103 RBI.302 avg / 31 HR / 92 RBI.291 avg / 38 HR / 119 RBIPlus he plays a better than average 3B. This puts him among the premier 3B in baseball, I'd say top 5, if not better. Compare that to what the other top guys are getting paid and he's a bargain, considering the huge lack of free agent depth this year. He probably would have gotten at least 20 if not 30 million more in the open market
11/14/2006 12:57:59 PM
Hometown discount Sticking with the Cubs, Wood resigns for one year for up to $6 mil based on playing time, etc
11/14/2006 2:02:29 PM
Aramis: Declining Average, Declining OPS. He's getting less hits, hitting the ball less hard, and talking less walks.
11/15/2006 3:47:20 AM
I wouldn't say his average is really declining. The year he hit .318 was more of an outlier compared to his career average of .279. And compared to that average he hit above it last year anyways. Plus, the difference in hits between the last few years isn't really a whole lot when you use the same AB. See below (let's just use 550 AB as an even number)2004: .318 avg - 175 hits2005: .302 avg - 166 hits2006: .291 avg - 160 hitsI don't think you can really look at those numbers and claim that he is significantly declining. I mean 6 extra hits is just 1 hot week. 15 hits is maybe 1 less slump or a good hot month. Yeah it makes a bit of a difference, but not one that makes you that much less valuable. Also, he had a career year in walks last year w/ 50. Yeah, he had a few more at bats than he's normally had, but if we break that down similar to above, there's really no difference, and no way you can legitimately say he's walking less.

espn.com reporting that the Blue Jays are close to getting the Big Hurt.http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2663691This would be a good pickup for them, if they only had some pitching to go with Halladay.
11/15/2006 11:55:58 PM
Red Sox are set to sign Drew to a 4 year $48M contract. So $12M a year? That works out to about 500k for every game he'll be healthy enough to play.** oh and for those who remember it last year metsblog.com is doing the Hot Stove thing again and he has good connections at the Winter Meetings (start Dec. 4th).. it's obviously going to be Mets heavy but I think people liked the way he covered the other teams too last year.[Edited on November 16, 2006 at 1:15 PM. Thomas will be riding the DL within weeks on that turf. He's had 5 ankle/foot surgeries since 1996.
11/16/2006 1:16:07 PM
^ He'll be okay if he's DH'ing. As for the JD Drew pickup, I think the Sox are paying way too much for him. Plus I think he is a crappy fit for what the Red Sox really need (i.e. speed, defense, and reliability). He is a high OBP guy though when he plays so if he stays healthy, he can certainly help, but I think they could have done better at 12 M a year than him.
11/16/2006 2:12:04 PM

11/16/2006 2:30:53 PM
i would trade giles for a bag of peanuts
11/16/2006 2:33:02 PM
^^^ that would be huge for the bravos. that would put the brothers giles together so thats cool for them. the braves definitely dont need saltalamacchia with mccann behind the dish and ho ra has been iffy for a while. getting peavy in the starting rotation would give us arguably the best rotation in the NL with smoltzie, chuckie james, hudson, and a healthy hampton.[Edited on November 16, 2006 at 2:46 PM. 11/16/2006 2:45:35 PM

11/16/2006 3:06:27 PM
11/16/2006 5:16:40 PM
Love the idea of that deal for Peavy, but I wonder who the Braves will use/get for 2B. I guess they can give Tony Pena Jr a shot there or maybe Aybar, but I don't know. HoRam sucks because he is just a change speeds pitcher who doesn't change speeds very well, gets hurts alot, and can't strike anyone out. Saltamacchia sucked this year, but was still considered a future star and had no place with the Braves since LaRoche and McCann both proved their worth.Great trade if it happens. What is Peavy's contract situation?
11/16/2006 5:27:40 PM
its not happening, that trade is less realistic than a mets world series championshipi mean, carlos beltran would swing at strike three before the padres pulled the trigger on that
11/16/2006 5:28:37 PM
^^Peavy's got 2 years left on his contract... he's due 4.75 mil in 07 and 6 mil in 08.
11/16/2006 5:32:31 PM
^^ haha - seriously are there any reliable sources mentioning this trade??^ Thanks for the info - he is a huge bargin at those prices assuming he gets back to his 03-05 levels and not his 06 results.[Edited on November 16, 2006 at 5:33 PM. Reason : ^]

TORONTO (AP) -- Frank Thomas and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized a two-year, $18 million contract on Friday. The Blue Jays reached a tentative deal with the 38-year-old designated hitter Wednesday night and spent Thursday wrapping up the details. The contract includes a $10 million option for the 2009 season. Thomas led the Oakland Athletics with 39 homers and 114 RBIs last season, batting .270. In 17 big league seasons, he has hit .305 with 487 home runs and 1,579 RBIs.http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AsObdUOHmVO3xD6Oq9tgJowRvLYF?slug=ap-bluejays-thomas&prov=ap&type=lgns

I have to say of all the insane spending so far this year Gary Matthews Jr. might be the worst deal. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and what he did last year, but 50 mill over 5 years?

A couple things coming out of the winter meetings.Jason Schmidt has reportedly signed a 3 year $47MM deal with the Dodgers. The Mets are in discussions about acquiring recently turned 25 year old Rich Harden from the A's. The names being discussed include Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman, and/or Oliver Perez. This would take the Mets out of the Zito sweepstakes likely.Rumor out here is Mike Piazza will sign with the A's for a 1 year $8-9MM deal to be DH and fill in at C when Kendall needs a rest.[Edited on December 6, 2006 at 1:25 PM. maddux likely to padres for about 20 mil over 2 years
12/6/2006 1:27:00 PM
A few more things (some are a bit old, but never showed up in this thread, and there are others, but I don't feel like scouring to find them all):1) Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres neared agreement Tuesday night on a $10 million, one-year contract. The deal for the four-time Cy Young Award winner would contain a $6 million player option for 2008. The price of the option would increase incrementally up to $10 million if Maddux pitches 200 innings.2) The Boston Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with shortstop Julio Lugo that would pay him $36 million over the next four years. 3) The Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with Drew on a contract that could bring him $70 million over the next five years. Although Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein stressed that Drew has not yet taken a physical, he told reporters that Drew is earmarked for the No. 5 spot in the batting order behind David Ortiz and Ramirez. 4) The Rangers crossed off the first of their two biggest must-dos on their list when right-hander Vicente Padilla agreed to a three-year contract worth $33-$34 million with a club option for a fourth year and $15 million, sources said late Monday.
