What are private homeowners and business allowed to view/film with security cameras? Can I just point a security camera down the street? Out the front window? What if it is just a webcam?

If there isn't a standing law against it, sure, why not?

I guess I don't have a good understanding of wiretap laws.

The street is public property ... I don't think there is any expectation of privacy on a public street ...

However, pointing your camera into someone elses property is not allowed. You can usually get away with it via notification ("Joe, I'm filming the street but your bedroom window is visible in the frame, keep that in mind"). But filming public space from your private property is allowed to the best of my knowledge.

I've seen professional camera crews put up signs before: "By entering this area, you are agreeing to be filmed." But I thought it was stupid and legally unneccesary.
