the front brakes on my sister's car sounds like metal grinding together when depressing the brake pedal. It's not squeaking, but a grinding sound. There's this "winding, looping" sound when the car is rolling ( don't know if that make any sense). Anyway, can anybody fix that for my sister? I know Dan is busy, so I don't know if he can do it or now. It's a 95 Toyota Avalon.

I could take a look at it on tuesday. I am not nearly as knowledgable as Dan but I have done my fair share of work. Probably just replace the rotor and pads.

the grinding sound is on account of her being a girl and not replacing the brake pads many thousand miles ago when they started squeelingnow she definitely needs pads and rotors
10/1/2006 7:19:14 PM
yea, I know she screwed up. How much is it gonna cost her?
10/1/2006 7:38:52 PM
I'll hazard a guess and say, a lot more than it would have many thousand miles ago
10/1/2006 7:52:18 PM
Guesstimate for parts alone 75-150.

wow guesstimates, suppositions, vehicular neglect, and non-gauranteeable repairs! this thread is awesome!

lol

yep, sorry I couldnt track down all the specs of everything on that car and give him the exact cost at each business.

pads are 20-50 a setrotors are 20-90 each depending on what you getthose prices are at advance auto parts.

this was your sister's front passenger rim. that wasn't the issue but I am not sure how that went unnoticed and she has no idea where it came from. anyways...changing the front brakes tomorrow. She didn't want to hang around for me to check the back so I will try to get her to give me the time to do that tomorrow after changing the brakes too.
10/2/2006 7:39:57 PM
^ someone was retarded enough to drive with that rim?
10/2/2006 8:07:52 PM
damn, does she need to change the rim too?
10/2/2006 8:10:11 PM
um...yes. she is on her temp spare right now and I told her I would do my best to find a rim but there is no way I can find something by tomorrow. She can check local junkyards, maybe craiglist, or the dealership. She could also go for aftermarket or something. I don't really know. I've never seen that on a car that wasn't in a wreck so I don't know where she should go for that. Maybe ask Dan or some of the other guys who have worked in shops might have some input. Her solution to the rim also depends on how much she is looking to spend.

^ hubcap heaven sells used rims
10/2/2006 9:45:34 PM
where is it? or a number so I can call and ask if they have one
10/3/2006 12:18:54 AM
Get busy calling all the salvage yards. You can nail most of them in less than a half hour. Some of my personal favorites: Wagner's, Nine's, Jackson, Martin's Import.
10/3/2006 12:20:26 AM
thanks. no classes tomorrow for me so I will give them a call.
10/3/2006 12:48:51 AM
Call City in Durham and Price's in Knightdale as well

hgtran I meant to tell your sister that she needs to know that I CANNOT take the tire off her old rim and put it on the new one and balance it. When her new rim comes in she will need to take it somewhere. I told her I could put it on for her but for some reason I wasn't thinking. Yes I could put the rim on for her but it would be pointless since it won't have a tire on it. She will need to come pick it up and take it somewhere unless one of the other people in the garage can mount and balance a tire for her. Sorry about that.
10/3/2006 11:52:04 PM
yea, i'll let her know. Thanks man, I appreciate you doing this.
10/4/2006 12:45:45 AM
crossroads exxon mounts and balances fairly cheap
10/5/2006 12:21:41 PM
^thanks
10/5/2006 12:39:35 PM
don't let her forget that her tire is over here so she will need to come get it and also her warranty for her new brake pads.
