9/30/2006 10:19:30 AM
Gambling IS illegal....
9/30/2006 10:22:27 AM
i mean... Gambling IS illegal...
9/30/2006 10:26:08 AM
Old, and why would you want to play on-line vs. bots and allegedly randomly drawn cards?
9/30/2006 10:27:56 AM
link?
9/30/2006 10:42:53 AM
I know that they've been throwing this legislation around for a long time, but I didn't think that things were this far along. I'd like a link because my husband's online poker is practically his second job.
9/30/2006 10:46:53 AM
damn, time to play some more bodog
9/30/2006 11:22:48 AM
link please, pm it to me. my girlfriend works for a law firm that focus's in online gaming, so her boss would be very interested.last word i heard was that it was not passing the senate.
9/30/2006 11:33:10 AM
isnt it already illegal to play for money online?
9/30/2006 12:10:29 PM
theyre banning it because they can't legally get a piece of it (since the companies are offshore)
9/30/2006 1:09:29 PM
its already banned...
9/30/2006 1:11:09 PM
My husband laughed at me when I told him this. Apparently, they've been trying to pass a law against it for about a decade now. It's already illegal to host it in the US and most (is not all) banks will not authorize payments to online gambling sites. But since there are intermediaries like FirePay who handle the financial transactions and everything is hosted outside of the US, he considers the point moot.
9/30/2006 1:24:33 PM
9/30/2006 1:34:58 PM
your internet provider will be required to block IP addresses of any gambling site, pokerstars, full tilt, bodog etc...your bank will also reject transactions from people like firepay, etc.thats what that bill says.
9/30/2006 1:54:51 PM
d'oh! wonder what my brother will do now when he's not at work
9/30/2006 2:04:07 PM
the sites must not take it seriously, since i saw an ad for bodog multiple times today.
9/30/2006 2:12:51 PM
9/30/2006 2:46:14 PM
if they can get away with this, you might as well wait for a seriously enforced internet sales tax[Edited on September 30, 2006 at 2:47 PM. Reason : .]

Here's the billhttp://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d109:15:./temp/~bdqjkT::|/bss/d109query.html|H.R. 4777__________________________________________________________________________________Here's my letter to my senatorMr. Graham,As an honest citizen of South Carolina, I emplore you to vote against the bill known currently as H.R. 4777. It is sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte and it is aimed at making online gambling illegal. It is quite unfair that he conveniently exempted horseracing and fantasy league sports from his bill, and shows me that he doesn't care so much about gambling as he does about politics. Horseracing will just as quickly reduce your bankroll as poker, but he doesn't care about consistency, its about political soundbites. If you, or any other senator or representative in my district votes for any bill that attempts to ban online gambling, I will NEVER vote for you or that person again. I hate to be a one-issue person, but my party (your party) has been letting me down far too often when it comes to private rights. I will be voting Libertarian in any election where my only other choices are Democrats or a person who supports banning online gambling. Please don't underestimate the number of people who feel the way I do. We are politcally active and motivated voters and we won't stand for this erosion. Don't let me down, and don't cost yourself my vote in the future.[Edited on September 30, 2006 at 3:05 PM. Reason : .]

9/30/2006 3:06:12 PM
David, they aren't shutting the sites down, they're updating the Wire Act to include the internet. It's illegal to use a phone line to place a bet and they're adding to it to make it illegal to use the internet. Thus, neteller and firepay aren't shut down, they're just not allowed to transfer money in order for use in gambling.^Don't shovle this entirely on conservatives. We don't all want this. That's why I'm lambasting members of my party on this. But don't think this is strictly partisan. Many dems will vote for this shit too.[Edited on September 30, 2006 at 3:07 PM. Reason : .]

Are they based out of the US?
9/30/2006 3:07:40 PM
9/30/2006 3:13:34 PM
No, but your bank or credit card company is and that's who they're aiming at directly. Making it illegal to ship it to firepay or neteller with the purpose of making a bet.

For some reason they're only temporaryhttp://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d109:15:./temp/~bdIDez::|/bss/d109query.html|Just go to Congress.org and search for representative Goodlatte and then H.R. 47777Most recent action on the bill was to place it on the Union calendar.

are you sure this bill is banning poker websites and not sports betting sites. Party Poker and all those sites specifically say on their ads that "this is not a gambling website". I thought this bill was aimed at stopping placing bets on games and such but i may have misunderstood

Not everyone throws away their money playing online poker. One of my husband's friends from high school left college to pursue his online poker career and he makes between $200,000-$300,000 a year playing online poker. He treats poker just as most people treat a job and has been extremely successful at it for at least the six years that I have known him. He's also wisely managed his money. My husband has a degree in mathematics and he loves the strategy, probability, and statistics involved in playing poker. He's not nearly as good as his friend, but he has managed to consistently profit from his onling poker playing the entire time that I have known him. There have been times when winning like $1,000 in a tournament has really helped when things were tight.

^Whether or not your bank kicks it out probably depends on the site you're trying to have $ transferred to. We've definitely had to use the Firepay account for PokerRoom.

*shrugs*He found something that he had a natural knack for, educated himself about the game, practiced, found out that he is far better than most players, and has been a success. I don't blame him for it. He enjoys the game, but he treats it like a job. He keeps regular working hours, he studies, researches, and practices the game, he does some work for some of the sites that he plays on, he's invited to the larger tournaments like the WPT and plays well. He knows the game and that's how he makes his living. As far as he is concerned, I consider it to be just as much of a career as playing a professional sport is a career.
