Since Torbush got the job, Carolina's football teams have gone 42-57 overall and 26-40 in ACC games. Baddour hasn't coached a game or signed a recruit, but he shares responsibility for this steady slide. Of more importance, Baddour has primary responsibility for where the program is heading. That's why he may have no other choice except to take the action he wants to avoid. But it's not Bunting's program. It's not Baddour's program, nor chancellor James Moeser's. It's the Carolina football program's, and if winning games is a primary objective, everyone involved has an obligation to make an honest, if painful, evaluation about Bunting. In Bunting's sixth season, job performance should no longer hinge on potential and commitment. The central issues now have to be production and direction. And as much as everyone admires Bunting and wishes him well, the production isn't there and the direction is questionable at best. Despite all of the optimistic rhetoric and promises of great strides just ahead, very little about Carolina's program looks healthy. The 52-7 loss at Clemson was no accident. It was the result of a team and a program near collapse. Something is dreadfully wrong when a sixth-year coach's team can't compete for more than a series or two. And it's not as though there were great expectations for Bunting in '06. With a new quarterback for the second straight season and a thin offensive line, a competitive 6-6 finish would have been enough for Bunting and Baddour to make reasonable arguments that title contenders were on the way for 2007 and '08. Logically, no one could buy such assertions today. There's still time for the Tar Heels to reach those goals, and Bunting deserves the opportunity to make what he can of eight remaining games. But nothing so far suggests that rapid improvement is in sight. The defense, which had its moments last season, clearly is in retreat. The offense, in its first season under a new coordinator, has little grasp of fundamental execution. There's no sign of confidence in either unit. The performance at Clemson smacked of an ill-prepared team that essentially quit in the first quarter. It's not easy for any of us to admit we made a mistake in judgment. That's even harder to do when good people -- Baddour and Bunting -- with good intentions are involved. But Bunting is failing. There's no other way to describe it. What's more, there's nothing about his body of coaching work to indicate that one or two more years on the job will be better than the first six.
