Assistantship FTW. Don't even attend unless you have one in writing.

i got in with no funding at first (used financial aid).....but eventually got to TA (and a couple hours of research) the next semester and got tuition wavednow this past summer, and for fall and spring, I have a full time RA

I been Co-op-ing for almost 2.5 years. It has paid for school and more. Its a great experience too. I highly recommend it.
9/20/2006 9:00:50 PM
Assistantship. I second about not attending unless its paid for.
9/20/2006 9:03:39 PM
TA'd for my master's. RA'd for PhD program (I'm on a semi-permanent vacation from PhDness right now)Get the shit in writing, and seriously consider your options when it comes to programs and their funding. There's always a cost/benefit analysis to consider, and it may well be worth going to a lesser-tiered program if they're going to foot the bill unless you're in a super-specialized field. Most of the time, just having the paper in hand is the key, and I've seen way too many cohorts up to their asses in debt for what's not a highly-paid field to begin with.

Government Loans and hopefully a TA year so I can get everything waived.
9/20/2006 9:29:53 PM
No help initially, just loans...Worked out a TA for a little help, found a niche I could fill for a GA that was hourly for my first semester. Then I was given a Powerbook and a tuition package. Now I have the TA money, GA stipend and tuition package, and a laptop.I was very, very lucky and should be out of debt very soon.

wow what a pretentious group of assholes. a lot of people go to graduate school without TAs, RAs, fellowships, or co-ops. some people are willing to invest in their future. I had a TA and was thankful for it, but geez.
9/21/2006 12:59:40 AM
^ An assistantship shows that the school is willing to invest in you. In the academic world it's all about who you know and who you work for. You're not just earning an advanced degree, you're inheriting your advisor's reputation. Assistantship are a reflection of your value to an already respected scientist. That will carry weight as you begin to start your career and make your own name.

if you are going back for engineering you should be able to get tuition plus at least 13.5k plus insurance easy. if you dont get at least that, then look at another program.if you go to state and you had even a moderately good gpa, you are made
9/23/2006 12:01:03 AM
I am sponsored by a company to do research for them (which is paying a nice salary also), in addition to having a formal research assistantship from the university, which gives me free tuition (even though I'm not taking classes) and a monthly stipend. The money you get from an assistantship is chickenscratch, and you'll probably need to find additional sources of income to live comfortably. The free tuition waiver is worth it, though, especially if you're out of state. GaTech tried to get me to pay nearly $20k a year in OOS tuition just for me to do "research" under their name. Fuck that.

Family loans.

1st semester... I fronted the cost, assistantship paid it back2nd semester... paid out of pocket3rd semester... paid out of pocketI plan on paying for the rest myself (i work 35+ a week), but my new company says they are going to help out as well... we'll see
9/23/2006 10:08:37 AM
Took out a small loan to cover living expenses. Since I am getting my masters in Sweden, tuition is free for everyone plus I get free medical care because of the social system. I'll probably apply for a scholarship next semester to cover all of my additional expenses.

don't listen to people who say "don't go to grad school unless it's paid for"if i had gone to grad school for what i did in undergrad (biological engineering), i could have had a full ride... but that wasn't what i WANTED to learn about. and it is not what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.i just started grad school in industrial design and i love it so far... but i did have to take out loans to pay for it. some grad programs just don't have the funding that others do.. but if it is something you really want to do then i say go for it
9/24/2006 1:32:30 PM
'yo mamma'
9/24/2006 1:37:05 PM
^^yeah i'd really like to do industrial design too, but think i'd rather do EE morei might approach Dr. Hooper to see if i can at least take a few of the classes if i get in
9/24/2006 3:13:35 PM
there are a lot of engineers in the track 3 program for ID, and there is an EE major in there now with me. if you are interested i would definately talk to either percy hooper or bryan laffitte and see if you could take some classes or see what courses they offer that would interest you
9/24/2006 5:01:35 PM

9/24/2006 9:21:46 PM
if i ever go to graduate school, i will have to thank Hurricane Ivan, Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Dennis, Tropical Storm Frances, flooding in NY a couple months ago, and flooding in Ohio last year....Disaster work $$$$$$$$$$$$$$[Edited on September 24, 2006 at 9:51 PM. Reason : w]

Im on my second masters. First year of grad school was a research assistant. Second was half RA and half time TA. This year im a TA. This is in Engineering at first and now in Business.
9/25/2006 9:43:14 AM
If I could pay for undergraduate school on my own without loans, I think I could do it for graduate school as well. I won't... but I could.
9/25/2006 6:10:42 PM
i wanna go to wssu, so hopefully a minority scholarship
