i wouldn't count on that

i can't go into a walmart without seeing about 80% mexicans out of the total amount of people that are there

i worked the layaway counter at tj maxx in HS for my first job - there were lots of just pathetic cheap bastards that used it - some of my favorites were people putting down an individual item that was less than $10 when the minimum payment to have it held was $5

What is lay away?

this makes sense because

Layaway is reserved for stores who sell to people who will actually pay for what they buy.

People without bad credit. People who speak English. People who are citizens.

People who know that 10 items or less means 10 items or less in the checkout line.

People who don't shoot off their guns in the bathroom stall while wearing a Carolina shirt.

That guy looked white/redneck so I assume he's a citizen

I wasn't talking about one particular demographic, just the common bond they all happen to share in Wal-Mart.

when I worked at a shoe store in the mall, I had people ask if they could get shoes on lay away

I was like, wtf if you can't afford a $100 pair of shoes then maybe you shouldn't be buying $100 shoes

A couple of weeks ago, I was in a Super Wal-Mart. A mexican employee there was saying some spanish shit on the intercom. I was like WTF

Layaway is when you "buy" something for a down payment but you can't afford it then, so it's held for you until a later date when you can supposedly afford it?

I am pretty sure that's the way most stores do it, but I would imagine there are some variations depending on the merchant.

Lots of poor, broke, and black people enjoy the benefits of layaway. Yes, shoes are a popular item.

[Edited on September 14, 2006 at 12:31 PM. Reason : icy white shoes and a tall tshirt]

It's all about the language for me.

The English language is the superior language. I think there would be no great loss if we eradicated Spanish. The people are valuable assets, but they need to speak English.

And if you're going to criticize me for talking about Spanish in a Wal-Mart thread, and you don't see that correlation, then you, my friend, don't know much about America

Does the retialer let you leave with the item?

No, it just means that they won't sell it to someone else.

I haven't personally done it because it's stupid, but I think its for shoes, clothes that may not be there when they can afford it, hell I don't know - but I'm white and have money.

You guys are forgetting another reason why someone would put something on layaway. If there is an item you want that is on sale and the store ran out of said item but expects more to come in after the sale is over some stores let you lock on the item's sale price if you put it on layaway... but most stores have policies against that.

When I was a kid my mom used to put my Christmas stuff on lay away. That way 1- I couldn't snoop and find it, and 2- she could make payments on it rather than coughing up all the money at once. I didn't know anyone still had layaway... weird!

not really

i mean, its an interest free loan.

think about it, if you are buying a lawn mower or something, make payment with no financing.

how's that stupid?

the concept is good, the abuse is what is stupid.

you could even argue with the minor effects of inflation, layaway saves you money by buying something 2 months from now at today's price.

how is it a loan?

they don't give you the item early. You might as well save the money yourself and then buy it when you have the money

i used it with my digital camera; they were on sale and it was the last one that they had; i had check around other stores for it and none of the other ones had it, and when it sold out that was the end of them; so i put it on layaway and came back a week later when i had the money

Growing up my mom was the lay away queen. We never had any money so she'd always have stuff like Christmas presents and birthday stuff on lay away for months in hopes that by the time each came aorund, she could hopefully buy them.

if you put some money down for something, and then decide later that you don't want it, do you get the money back that you already put down? i forgot this layaway thing existed...
