The apple store is down in preperation for something big. Apple has a conference scheduled for 1pm today. Speculation is that the touchscreen video iPod might be 2.5 hours away. http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/11/steve-jobs-dishes-tomorrow-at-10-00am-pst-1-00pm-est-be-there/

you apple fanboys really piss me off
9/12/2006 12:30:58 PM
I don't own a single apple product, so I'm not sure how that qualifies me as an apple fanboy. But it's cool that I piss you off somehow.

I don't think that it is going to be a new iPod.What IS certain is that Apple will show its new movie download service to rival Amazon and AOL.
9/12/2006 12:45:47 PM
Im a microsoft fanbut I love my damn nano
9/12/2006 12:45:56 PM
I'm just waiting for the 8gb+ iPod nano. I don't want a lot of features like video, e-mail, and astrology calculator. I just want good sound quality, good battery life, a good UI, and something of reasonable size. Give me that and I'll throw in my Sennheiser HD595s and be happy
9/12/2006 12:46:31 PM
would there be any chance that they are going to include an FM receiver in one of the future versions?
9/12/2006 1:00:31 PM
Seriously. I almost bought the woot yesterday because it was a $22 512 MB mp3 player with an FM tuner built in. There's no reason why ALL mp3 players shouldn't have a tuner, let alone the most popular one ever.
9/12/2006 1:06:14 PM
engadget can't take all the hits it's getting right now...has anyone else noticed this issue?
9/12/2006 1:14:01 PM
yeah. Engadget shit the bed right at 1pm. http://gizmodo.com/ will have to do for now.]
9/12/2006 1:15:42 PM
apparently one of the announcements is that iPod now supports gapless playback.i hope its just a firmware upgrade, and not a new product.[Edited on September 12, 2006 at 1:18 PM. Reason : df]
9/12/2006 1:17:34 PM
New iPod nanos. Double the storage space for the same price. Slightly smaller. Better battery life. Color.]
9/12/2006 1:19:20 PM
oh noes, not the colors again!why can't apple seem to come out with a fire-engine red iPod? they had all these neon colors in the mini, and now again in the nano.fire-engine red would be the coolest color.
9/12/2006 1:26:38 PM
Yeah, as much as I'd want an ipod that wasn't black or white, those other three colors are horrible looking. What's wrong with a good solid blue? or hell even yellow.
9/12/2006 1:37:36 PM
So I got my 8gb iPob nano?
9/12/2006 1:42:55 PM
yeah i didn't think they would rescusicate those colors again, especially after they killed the neon imacs, ibooks, and the ipod minis. seemed like they were trying to project a more serious image.they tried their hand at these funky colors, what they need now are some sober colors. my ideas would be:ruby redtopaz blueemerald greenand maybe even steel grey (or graphite) and orange (but not a flashy neon one).[Edited on September 12, 2006 at 1:46 PM. 9/12/2006 1:45:33 PM
^^Yes. 8GB nano. 24 hour battery life. $249. I'm seriously considering getting one.
9/12/2006 1:46:34 PM
i'm gonna be checking slickdeals for these until the price is right
9/12/2006 1:49:13 PM
The 8gb capacity is a bigger deal than what colours the damn things come in.
9/12/2006 2:01:50 PM
It doesn't look like we're getting a full new iPod today. Unless Steve is saving that for the end. So far we've got redesigned videos, shuffles, and nanos but no touchscreen iPod. Right now they're talking about the new iTV that you can use to stream music and video wirelessly to your TV. Big whoop. ]
9/12/2006 2:06:49 PM
9/12/2006 2:08:39 PM
The new videos are 60% brighter, with better battery life and larger HDD. 80GB for $349.Pic of the new shuffle. ]
9/12/2006 2:10:25 PM
^^ all the videos downloaded have 4x the resolution that they used to, plus you can buy movies now from iTMS.[Edited on September 12, 2006 at 2:11 PM. Reason : .]
9/12/2006 2:11:03 PM
my 60 gb has enough space, and the brightness is great too, and i don't download videos or movies.but dammit better battery life is what i covet
9/12/2006 2:17:30 PM
Oh and one of the new things you can download from itunes is games for the ipod. I don't know if they work on the older ones or just the newly redesigned ones or what. but another big whoop if you ask me.
9/12/2006 2:23:08 PM
i swear to god technology is the shitnot only do they somehow make it brighter and give it more memory, but they make the battery last longershit boggles my mind[Edited on September 12, 2006 at 2:24 PM. Reason : ^yeah i agree]
9/12/2006 2:23:26 PM
Heh, expect the bookstore to be discounting the old models. They still have a shit-ton of them left.
9/12/2006 2:28:15 PM
show's over. no really new iPod. I swear I've been waiting for a touchscreen one for so long, I almost don't think I'm excited about it anymore. Stupid Apple.
9/12/2006 2:30:04 PM
hmm... apparently no education pricing? odd...
9/12/2006 2:31:57 PM
^I was going to say the same thing. I'm not showing a discount either.
9/12/2006 2:38:10 PM
^ Yeah that's GOT to change. I'd imagine college folks are a huge market share of iPod buyers. There's lots of broken links and junk on the site, I'm *hoping* prices will reflect discounts soon, but considering how relatively cheap they already are, it may not actually happen. No REAL new iPod is stupid. Stop dragging it along and bust out a widescreen/touchscreen iPod, even if it's $600+. Leave the other 5G options, but for goodness sake unveil a real video iPod.Last, limiting the colored nanos to only 4GB is very dumb. I'll bet quite a few folks will want a colored nano in 2 or 8GB flavors.I was expecting to have to resist the urge to buy something, but honestly there's nothing I see that I want. A fireengine red nano would've seriously struck me right though
9/12/2006 2:38:29 PM
This is most likely a very stupid question, but I'll go ahead and ask it anyways. When they say the new nanos are available immediately, is that just available online for immediate shipping, or if I go by the Apple store on my way home will I be able to get one? I am just about enough of an impulse buyer to pick up an 8GB if I can do it NOW. Yes, I know I could just call, but I thought I'd ask here first.
9/12/2006 2:44:13 PM
9/12/2006 3:27:29 PM
i'll have to see them in person, but i can't say i'm a big fan of the new Nanos, mostly because I hated the Minis. I always thought the iPod Mini was a bastard-child of the iPod - the brushed metal, the overly-rounded sides, but most of all, that awful "sharp" edge along the top and bottom..... i dunno, it just didn't feel polished to me, like the regular iPod and the 1st gen Nanos. With the sharp edges along the top and bottom, there are really 3 distinct surfaces on the Mini/New Nano. I prefer the slightly rounded edges and corners around the whole device, making it feel like there's only one surface. but the new Shuffles though..... that's hot. And we have something to look foward to in the iTV, to be released next year - finally an easy way to stream video from your computer to your TV, without having an actual media center computer. I'm not saying I would/will get one, but i think that's a major missing spot in the market now. There is still no easy way to get video from your computer to your TV except for making a media center PC and keeping it next to/near your computer (although i think the XBox 360 can do this with some add-ons). I very much look forward to the say when i can have a central house server with music/videos/pictures and seamlessly and easily stream them to any number of TVshttp://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060912-7723.html
9/12/2006 3:42:41 PM
To answer my own question about store availability of the new products, I called the Apple Store. The conversation went something like this:Me: Yeah, I was wondering if you had any of the new...Apple Store guy: hahaha...Me:
9/12/2006 3:45:10 PM
^^a modded xbox can stream from a networked HD to a TV, as well as do a lot of other mediacenter type things. Its much cheaper than a home theater PC, and I'm sure this iTV will be DRM-laden just like everything else apple releases.
9/12/2006 4:09:41 PM
Yes but the same people that have a modded xbox also download their mp3s for free and use p2p or whatever to download tv shows and movies for free. The other 98% of the world NEEDS a company like Apple to come along and put everything in a nice pretty little package for them and charge them twice the price. The core market is people that would rather pay $2 to download last night's episode of lost rather than just DVR it in the first place. And now they can watch it on their TVs. Apple will make millions off this product.
9/12/2006 4:23:06 PM
9/12/2006 5:03:49 PM
Well of course the world doesn't NEED it. What I meant was there is no shortage of morons out there that are willing to hand over their entire paychecks to apple $1 at a time because they aren't smart enough to figure out a cheaper alternative. And I didn't mean to imply that everyone with a modded xbox stole music and movies. Just that if you have a modded xbox, the odds are that you at least know where to start looking if you don't want to pay for stuff. And see I really think you're missing my point when you're complaining about codecs and whatnot. My point is that you've exceeded the knowledge of the typical Apple consumer. They're not trying to meet the needs of the knowledgeable power users. They're trying to bring this sort of technology to the masses. People that don't already know that there are alternatives to this sort of product.
9/12/2006 5:46:30 PM
9/12/2006 5:55:08 PM
Apple makes the best mp3 players hands down.
9/12/2006 7:00:11 PM
^^My lord, did you miss my point entirely. Someone said that a modded xbox was an alternative for the iTV, and I was disagreeing. The products are made for two entirely different markets. I never said cheaper was better. Your definition of "better" would be skewed by how much technical knowledge you have. And for the most part Apple is in the business of making products for the low end technical user.
9/12/2006 7:24:11 PM
I have plenty of 'technical knowledge' and that was the only post of yours i read so....just because i have technical knowledge doesn't mean i HAVE to go out and buy the most complex piece of equipment simpley because i have the know how to figure it out and use it. The Apple ipod is by far the best on the market because of its simplisity and 'it just works' concept.
9/12/2006 7:47:50 PM
9/12/2006 7:55:44 PM
The new shuffle is hot and for a good price.
9/12/2006 9:19:18 PM
i think they don't make regular colors available so they can sell you the skins later
9/12/2006 9:48:37 PM
still like my iriver 20gb color, photo, fm radio, voice recorder, text viewer for $120, it may be fat but I dont care
