I have run Windows network setup wizard on Desktop (which is hardwired to wireless router) and on laptop (which connects wirelessly).I have put them both in the same workgroup. When I view workgroup computers from the desktop, I see the laptop, and can view the shared components associated with it. However, when I view the workgroup computers from the laptop, the desktop shows up, but I cannot browse it or anything as it says I do not have the permissions. I have set directories and the printer on "Share" but still cannot view through the network. What am I missing?

I dunno, I never run those netowork setup things...don't think that helps you much tho are both computers running xp? i suspect not, whenever i'm having problems of this nature its with a pre-2000 cxomputer trying to connect to a 2000+ machine.maybe go to control panel-printers, right click on the printer, ensure its shared. then click on the security and ensure that EVERYONE has full permissions on that printer.

yep both are XP.... printer is shared and security is ok...just makes me crazy that the desktop can access the laptop but not the other way around.

make sure that windows firewall crap is disabled
9/11/2006 9:25:49 PM
^ that shouldn't interfere, but test with it disabled anyway. don't leave it disabled tho unless you're using some sort of other software based firewall.

already done.I swear this thing should work... probably some stupid check box somewhere... but its definitely not the firewall.

i assume you've searched all thru google. type the exact error message in quotes, then add the two words share printer after it. change around your search a bit, i bet you'll find a solution.

What are you trying to share? -On the desktop, for folders, right click, properities, security, add \\laptopname\laptopusername-On the desktop, for printers, right click, properties, security, add \\laptopname\laptopusernameWeird the laptop doesn't require the same thing.

did that for the printer, and now it shows up when I go into "Add Printer" but I still cannot connect to it.

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.aspOnce you are able to share both from the desktop to the pc and vice versa then you'll be able to get the printer working also. It's usually the netBios part that most people miss.

i know you said its not the firewall.... but there are some settings under the firewall..network connections----change firewall settings----then you will have a general, exceptions, and advanced tab-----click the exceptions tab and make sure both computers are allowing file and printer sharingI know you have tried but I am pretty sure the desktop(computer connected to the printer) must be turned onNext step would be to try to share files.... if you are able to get files out of each computers shared folder then the printer should be easy after that....
