After travelling extensively through northern France and Belgium, I'm spoiled. I'm not talking about any fast food place - I mean really good french fries. Those steak places in mall food courts have pretty ok ones, and there are some stands at the Fair that usually have good ones, but are there any local restaurants that just have really awesome fries?

Bouchon in Yountville were really fucking good but that doesn't help much. Basically, any french restaurant worth a damn is going to do them right. What you probably tasted that was so much better was fries cooked in beef fat, instead of veggie/peanut oil.

There was some bbq joint here in Chapel Hill that had good, crispy fries, but I can't think of its name off hand. Suttons drug store on franklin street also has alright fries... but I can't really think of any places off the top of my head with better than fast food quality fries in Raleigh.

I'm going to start rendering beef fat and cooking fries in it. Damn soybean oil sucks dingalings for french fries.

Cookout fries are only so-so.

Back in the day, before most of you jizzlobbers were born, McDonald's used to cook their fries in beef tallow. They really RAWKED at the time. Now...not nearly so much.

Ugh, according to Wikipedia, the Belgians cook their fries in horse fat. Oh god, what was I eating.
I usually eat my fries with mayonnaise...but a lot of people think it's weird, and I don't know why - I learned it from my mom when I was little, because she's from Germany. I know some people who dip Wendy's fries into the Frostees which I think is gross.

I'd have to say that anywhere but Cookout has good ones-as far as fast food. Those nasty things are floppy, and covered in salt-literally covered. It's really gross.

there is absolutely nothing special about cookout fries. the hibernian has fries with cheese and gravy although it's not the best i've had, but it's still good.

btw, does anyone know if farmhouse has those fat bags? they're in the coupon book but i don't remember seeing it on the actual menu.

Try the fries at the bowling alley at 301 Nottingham Drive in Cary. Just off Buck Jones, a ways up walnut street.

That's where I've had the best french fries ever. They're the crinkle kind.

there are a few pommes frites places, mostly in NYC and Boston, that are european style. They're better than anything you can get in a fastfood restaurant, but still don't compare. Actually the best frites I've ever had were in Trier, Germany. I could eat them everyday all the time. However, the mayonnaise there is different from what we have here - often it's homemade with added spices thrown in.

as far as in Raleigh, the only place I know of is Enoteca Vin off of Glenwood. It's a rather pricey French restaurant that focuses mainly on wines, but they do serve pommes frites, along with a ribeye that will knock your socks off.

now if someone would tell me where I can get some Doner Kebaps in the US, I'd love you forever.

"Ugh, according to Wikipedia, the Belgians cook their fries in horse fat. Oh god, what was I eating."

I believe congress just spent some time debating and passing a law against eating horse. I wouldn't go flaunting your alternative horse meat eating life style on a public forum if I were you.

http://www.heritage.org/Press/Commentary/ed112404b.cfm?RenderforPrint=1

Quote :
"I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse." The next time you're tempted to say this, have a care. If some in Congress get their way, it could bring the FBI a-knocking on your door.

For some reason, in the midst of the war on terrorism and debates about the economy and Social Security, Congress is trying to criminalize horsemeat. It wants federal law enforcement -- the folks we rely on to investigate kidnappings and prevent terrorist attacks -- to stop people from buying and selling meat that comes from horses.

Low carb dieters should be particularly upset. Horsemeat has far fewer calories than beef, and it's low in fat and high in protein. If that isn't made for South Beach, what is? According to the USDA, horsemeat has "a flavor somewhat between that of beef and venison." Why would Congress want to deprive Americans of such gallopin' good steaks? Apparently, a small-but-vocal posse of horse lovers and animal rights types has been riding Congress for years to stop "the horse holocaust."

In Congress, 226 representatives and 10 senators have cosponsored the "American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act." Even the "Puppy Protection Act" only has 52 cosponsors. And no, we're not making this up.

Ironically, the "American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" is not about preventing the slaughter of horses. It does nothing to stop horses from being killed for dog food or glue or as a good Godfather-style warning. The Act would only outlaw the killing of, or commerce in, horses for "human consumption." A better name for the bill might be the "More Horses for Glue Act."..."

She wasn't flaunting an alternative horse eating lifestyle. She said what she learned AFTER the fact.

sarcasm |'sär?kaz?m|
noun

the use of irony to mock or convey contempt : his voice, hardened by sarcasm, could not hide his resentment. See note at wit .

ORIGIN mid 16th cent.: from French sarcasme, or via late Latin from late Greek sarkasmos, from Greek sarkazein ‘tear flesh,’ in late Greek ‘gnash the teeth, speak bitterly’ (from sarx, sark- ‘flesh’ ).
