There is something that makes noise just above my fireplace. When I opened the flue, it started growling. So, its not a bird. Its a very weak growl. What could it be? Its driving my cats crazy. Im not interested in killing it, just getting rid of it. [Edited on September 9, 2006 at 5:38 PM. Reason : 3]

the kind of animal that would be falling into chimneys...rat, possum, raccoon, maybe even one really pissed off injured squirrel...call animal control
9/9/2006 6:10:47 PM
This has nothing to do with darwinism. Its kids are probably fine, thus its reproductive success in not in jeopardy.
9/9/2006 6:11:18 PM
not a good living arrangement if it is stuck. your only other option is to get some type of equally sized thing and push its ass out.[Edited on September 9, 2006 at 6:32 PM. Reason : ive done that 2x in the last few days without realizing]
9/9/2006 6:12:11 PM
whatever you do, dont try to breed with it
9/9/2006 6:15:23 PM
Ok, gg to whoever guessed squirrel. I left the flue open, so it jumped down, started freaking out, then ran back up. Probably ill have to set a trap or something?
9/9/2006 6:17:15 PM
HA! I WIN!now call animal control
9/9/2006 6:18:25 PM
hahaha you don't think a squirrel can climb out of your chimney? ha
9/9/2006 6:18:58 PM
Not if it fell in and got injured. And regardless, starting a fire would be too much trouble.^^ I will if I cant lure it out and trap it myself.[Edited on September 9, 2006 at 6:23 PM. Reason : 234]

youre gonna have to let it die. this EXACT thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago. everyone i called, animal control, wildlife people, even pest removal experts (anyone i could get ahold of) would not come out to get this squirrel out of my fireplace. i was told that it would be a waste of a trip, because if it could not climb out, they certainly wouldn't be able to remove it without incident. if the animal was able to climb out, it would have done it already. something is keeping it from doing so... it'll dehydrate in about 5 or 6 days, and you can remove it then. just block off your fireplace so it can't get into your house, especially since you have cats.
9/9/2006 6:26:47 PM
cat vs. squirrel
9/9/2006 6:27:45 PM
it keeps jumping down though, but it keeps getting spooked and jumping back up. letting it die of dehydration would be a pain in the ass, the noise is anoying.
9/9/2006 6:31:37 PM
well here are your options:a) find someone to come out and remove it. you'd likely spend an hour trying to get someone, as well as up to $150 once they get there. if the squirrel is in the chimney, i'm not sure how theyd physically get it out. think of how fast the critters are. i can't imagine any expert that's good enough to catch a squirrel. so, the animal actually getting loose in your house is a real possibility. even if they can't do anything, i'm pretty sure they charge dinero just to make the trip. b) let it die and deal with the noise for the meantime. at some point it will become too weak to continue jumping around in your chimney. c) try to remove it yourself. i was told that if you open a door, and create a path to the door with chairs, pillows, blankets, etc, the squirrel's instincts will likely take it directly to the door. the door should be close for obvious reasons, and please realize this isn't 100% guaranteed to work.[Edited on September 9, 2006 at 6:42 PM. in my situation, i've got the pilot light for gas logs. i didn't want the fucker to pass out from the fumes, and light his ass on fire. talk about odor. good thing that didn't happen.

excellent job joshnumbers.

of course
9/9/2006 8:02:45 PM
We had a squirrel in ours once. The animal control people told us it was a duck, until they forced it out. It left sooty footprints on the walls.

i'm in your chimneyz, blockin your fluez

I love how any thread about an animal in need brings out every snuff-loving vermin on TWW. Exactly one sympathetic response in this whole thread. You people are a disgrace to this school, and once you finish your 6+ year pleasure cruise on your parents' dime, you're going to love the termination-without-cause world that awaits you, your discovery of your own "fitness to survive," and your parents' basement, in that order. Enjoy your idle deviance now detritus, because when the money has to flow in the opposite direction, it is going to be a very different story. And now get busy responding to this with the usual TWW lies about your perverse successes. I'm out; I have to disinfect my hands.

Wow, Joeanon, I'm amused you'd be ballsy enough to post something like that when you're currently trying to get rid of some ferrets. How would you feel if your owner just sold you to someone else? You're not thinking about what's best for the animal, if you're going by your own bullshit and assuming they have souls/feelings. God, I hate these lofty PETA bitches. [Edited on September 10, 2006 at 1:49 AM. Reason : .]

animals DO have feelingsand don't slam a dude for being lofty when you yourself are quite the same, albeit in the arts as opposed to animals
9/10/2006 1:54:37 AM
I'm not opposed to animals.I'm opposed to treating them the same as humans. I'm also opposed to linking this animal issue to being in college through some bizarre argument about money.[Edited on September 10, 2006 at 2:04 AM. Reason : .]

Get a squirrel trap for like $20 at walmart or find someone who has one. Just set it up, put some nuts in it and BAM. It's humane so you can retain your hippy status. That or feel free to climb up on your roof, remove your chimney cap/whatever is up there, and drop a long rope with some knots every so often space down the chimney. If it isn't hurt it should be a be able to climb up the rope easy. Make sure to tie one end to a brick or something heavier than what's down there and leave that end on the top of your roof so the rope doesn't fall in. This also serves the purpose so that you don't have to sit up on the damn roof all day holding a rope. It sounds corny but it'll make it easier for the squirrel to have something to grasp as opposed to brick/block walls.[Edited on September 12, 2006 at 12:32 PM. Reason : -]
