My roommate, who was always late with rent payments and paying bills and paying me back for bills I payed, has moved to a new place. He still owes me about $200 and hasn't returned my calls since this weekend. Meanwhile I had to cover bills for which he's still responsible for since I haven't gotten a new roommate yet. He still has some of his stuff there, including a few nice applicances.Options-Change the locks and don't let him get his stuff until he pays up-Small claims court-Blackmail him with the landlord since he moved out without telling them-Sell his stuff on craigslistExactly how hard should I play ball?
9/8/2006 12:08:54 PM
i the first option.
9/8/2006 12:10:59 PM
small claims court will take FOREVERI'd say locking his stuff up will get you your money the quickest
9/8/2006 12:11:39 PM
post his stuff on wolf web...sell his stuff until you get 200
9/8/2006 12:12:24 PM

9/8/2006 12:13:27 PM
1. go to his place of work2. knock him unconscious3. take $3004. ...5. you win
9/8/2006 12:25:30 PM
^ i like that ideaplus you're up 100
9/8/2006 12:30:59 PM
^^6. Profit!
9/8/2006 12:37:17 PM
options 1 and 3 simultaneously.
9/8/2006 12:40:29 PM
you could take a baseball bat and beat $200 worth of satisfaction out of him
9/8/2006 12:41:33 PM
option 1 immediately (new locks are like $8-$10 at lowes)option 3 if he doesn't take care of it within the next weekoption 4 if its not taken care of in the week after
9/8/2006 12:59:42 PM
9/8/2006 1:13:19 PM
If the $200 is worth more than your friendship with him, then do whatever's necessary to get that money back. If you still value his friendship, then let it go.
9/8/2006 1:13:27 PM
what kind of "friend" would fuck you out of $200?i wouldn't worry too much about that.
9/8/2006 2:04:45 PM
9/8/2006 2:12:00 PM
change the locks, hide his stuff. Let him know that he can get his stuff when he pays you $200. The worst he can do is come with the cops to get his stuff and you can claim, no he left it here when he moved. I'll sell it to him for $200. Win win situation.

I love how few, if any of the suggestions given in this thread thus far are legal.
9/8/2006 2:25:14 PM
Definitely hold his shit ransom, you really can't legally do that, but he also probably isnt going to call the cops
9/8/2006 2:26:45 PM
so this dude doesn't legally own him money?is dude still paying rent there?
9/8/2006 2:48:56 PM
Dude is still on the lease until the end of this month.
9/8/2006 3:09:03 PM
tell the landlord he moved out without finding a replacementchange the locks and hold his stuff for ransom until you get your moneycaution - your landlord might be pissed about you changing locks.my former roommate screwed me and another girl over by moving out with literally no notice. she didnt get her shit out for a month and refused to pay anything for that month. really hurt me financially cuz i was in grad school and only working one night a week at that time so i had no extra money. it wasn't exactly working out with her living there. she's not the easiest person to live with. plus her dog left shit stains all over the house. i paid $300 to get the carpets professionally treated and most of the stains are still there.i trusted her to do the right thing since we'd been friends for so long but sometimes your friends screw you over.
9/8/2006 3:32:03 PM
yeah that was pretty anal intensive

9/8/2006 4:10:28 PM
Is he trying to sublease the place? Is that why you say he's still responsible, or is he "breaking his lease" without notifying the landlord? Was there any prior monetary arrangements made concerning bills being paid while hes left you there?Either way, I like option 1 mixed with a little option 3.

Judge Judythe village judge told me here a local is going to appear, her daughter was drunk one night and went and got a tat(he would only say it was part of the body that is usually covered) The mom is suing the guy to get it removed and she will appear on Judge Judy.
9/8/2006 4:33:56 PM
^WTF, engrish prease
9/8/2006 4:43:27 PM
first off... is he still on the lease? if so, you legally can't lock him out. If he tries to sue, he could win, especailly cause it's not that much $$ in actuallity.I'm not to sure what else to tell you but I do know that much
9/8/2006 5:11:21 PM
haha locking the doors would be the coolest option[Edited on September 8, 2006 at 5:14 PM. Reason : i'd change the locks AND blackmail him with the landlord]
9/8/2006 5:14:14 PM
9/8/2006 5:15:04 PM
for a small percentage i'll get your money pm me for more details.
9/8/2006 9:33:13 PM
change the locks, leave a message on his voice mail, if he has it that if he doesn't pay you in xtime you will sell his shit.or get guido to start cracking kneecaps.
9/8/2006 9:49:30 PM
Small claims court. Your options 1 and 4 will likely get you sued. You can't change the locks or sell his stuff.[Edited on September 8, 2006 at 9:50 PM. Reason : add]
9/8/2006 9:49:32 PM
make a thread on tww directed to him
9/8/2006 10:04:03 PM
Dude - confer with the landlord and get him to LET YOU change the locks because he wants you to pay the bills. besides that...skipping out before the lease is up is BREACH of CONTRACT. he cant sue you after that.

I once had a roommate pay me $2k for a used car of mine ('93 Ford Probe)I found out later he had been driving it (9 months) without reregistering it and with a stolen tagand he had also stolen my replacement drivers license, which he used to release the car from the police impoundI started getting things in the mail from the city about unpaid parking ticketsI repossessed the car and told him if he wanted to challenge it, I would file identity theft chargesI resold the car for $2k moreI'm easy to get along with, but if you screw me, I am incredibly harsh[Edited on September 9, 2006 at 1:30 AM. Reason : quick lesson: get yo money]
9/9/2006 1:28:47 AM
I would suggest putting his stuff at a friend's place then deleting this thread.
